A little goodbye to an absolute legend.

Mack finishes up with us this weekend after just under a year at Waterloo House, and honestly, he’s been one of the hardest-working young people I’ve ever worked with.

Nothing was ever really too much trouble for him. Always loads of energy, always willing to get stuck in, always up for learning something new.

Occasionally extremely irritating at exactly the wrong moment during a busy service, obviously; but we’ll forgive him for that.

He’s matured massively in the time he’s been with us. He’s wise beyond his years, genuinely funny, dependable, and has brought a lot of levity to some pretty hectic days in the kitchen.

Hopefully he’s learned a fair bit from us as well. We’re really proud of the fact we employ young people here and give them a proper chance to learn, work hard and grow in confidence.

Mack is leaving us now to focus on his A-levels because, tragically, he won’t be working at Waterloo House forever like some of us will😂

Absolute legend. We’ll miss him loads.

And as for the photo: this is one Mack took on my phone when I asked him to take some pictures of us posing in Waterloo House merch.

So Mack, this one’s on you.

A little appreciation post for two absolute legends of Waterloo House music.

Andy Janik and Alex Chapman: our two musical maestros.

Andy brings us Cocktails & Jazz and a whole load of brilliant events throughout the year. Alex is here every Thursday with his own glorious brand of live music and a constantly changing mix of guests.

I ask a lot of both of them. Probably too much, to be honest. And they deliver every single time.

Between Thursday nights, Sunday afternoons and all the other music we squeeze into the weekends, they help us keep live music alive in Nailsworth.

It’s a lovely thing to be able to fill a room with people eating, drinking, laughing, singing and occasionally getting a bit emotional because someone’s absolutely nailed a song.

So, big love to Andy and Alex for everything they do for us and for the local music scene.

Absolute heroes, both of them.

WHAT’S ON THIS WEEK AT WATERLOO HOUSE

September is here, autumn’s creeping in, the weather’s getting worse… and somehow we’re getting busier.

THURSDAY
Alex Chapman is back, with Angela’s Sunset as the guest act. Alex is basically the bread in the Angela’s Sunset sandwich; starting and finishing the night.

Also, it’s the lovely Maria Smith final ever Let's Paint UK at Waterloo House. Absolute legend, inspiration to small businesses everywhere, and we’ll miss her loads.

5–8pm: 2 pints or 2 cocktails for £10

FRIDAY
Silent Book Club in the morning.

Then from 5–8pm:
Half-price burgers & hot dogs
Half-price cocktails
Half-price draught b**r
Half-price soft drinks

Still a ridiculous deal, just slightly streamlined so everyone gets served quicker and I might actually make some money.

Then DELICIOUS DEE is back later on. Big Friday incoming.

SATURDAY
Brunch as normal, then a party with a buffet for around 70 upstairs in the evening, downstairs open as usual.

Any pizza + any pint £15

SUNDAY
Brunch as normal, then a baby shower in the afternoon, with a brunch buffet.

FOOD TIMES
Brunch: Thu–Sun, 9–2:30
Evening kitchen: Thu–Sat, 5–9:30

New menus are also being worked on this week: trimming a few summer items and adding some new, heartier bits for autumn and winter.

Music, burgers, pizza, cocktails, brunch, b**r and good times.

See you this week.

Thursday night is the start of the weekend!

Thursday night is the start of the weekend!

This week at Waterloo House, Alex Chapman & Friends returns from the Summer break and presents returning local duo, Angela's Sunset. Paul was originally going to be playing solo this Thursday but Angela has managed to join him at the last minute. Presenting a solid set of self-penned songs, Angela's Sunset delivers a consistently polished performance and will start the Autumn Season off in style.

After a much-needed Summer break, it's great to be back among the Waterloo family. The Scrabble Rabble, The Party Potters, The Bar Hogs were all there in force for a gentle return without guests last Thursday. And, of course, Suzie bounced up to join me for a couple of numbers at the end.

Join us this Thursday, 3rd September, where you can enjoy cocktails, w**es, b**rs and burgers, infused by a relaxed live musical soundtrack at the coolest venue in Nailsworth.

Music begins 8pm.

WATERLOO WEEKLY

What a ridiculous weekend.

We nearly doubled our turnover compared with this Bank Holiday weekend last year, and it honestly felt like we didn’t stop for the entire thing.

Thursday saw Alex Chapman back from holiday and he was absolutely brilliant. We’ve tweaked the setup a bit and it worked so well; much more chilled, still great atmosphere, and just a really lovely night.

Friday was the final full Half Price Friday of the year before we change things up this week. Absolutely rammed again, then Jez & Jon took over from 8:30 with Motown, funk and soul. Brilliant, and hopefully we’ll have them back next month.

Saturday brunch was huge, Saturday afternoon stayed busy, and then we rolled into Mel’s 50th birthday party. Dave Pilla played a brilliant acoustic set, then later on the DJ took over and everyone properly got stuck in. One of those private events where everyone was just lovely, friendly and up for it. Staff had a great night too.

Sunday brunch was rammed again. Apologies to anyone who waited a little longer than usual; everything seemed to land at once, but the kitchen pushed through it as best they could. Really nice to see so much appetite for the food though, and hopefully that carries on well into autumn and winter.

Then came Cocktails & Jazz from 5–7, which was frankly ridiculous. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the place so full. People everywhere, brilliant atmosphere, everyone enjoying Bank Holiday Sunday properly.

Then karaoke from 8:30–11… also rammed.

So yes. Monster weekend.

I somehow also found time to go and wait around for a cricket match that never started because of the rain, have a b**r with the cricket lot, and get over to Giffords Circus on Sunday morning, which was absolutely brilliant. If you haven’t seen it yet, go.

I look tired because I am tired.

But what a weekend. So many different people through the doors, loads of food going out, loads happening, and it really does feel like Waterloo House is moving in the right direction.

Massive thank you to everyone who came in and especially to the staff who absolutely grafted.

See you this week.

We’re closed today, so if you’re looking for somewhere to spend Bank Holiday Monday, go and give our mates at The Hog at Horsley some love.

They’ve had Hogfest this weekend and the weather has absolutely battered it, which is particularly rotten timing with another road closure coming up for them over the next couple of weeks.

Today, thankfully, the sun is out.

They’ve got Thai food on today, plenty of b**r, plenty of staff who apparently still have some energy left, and live music from around 2pm as well.

So while we’re busy trying to work out how to restock Waterloo House after you lot cleaned us out, head up to The Hog, have a pint, get some Thai food and help them shift some of the b**r they bought for the weekend.

Small independents need the support when things outside their control make life harder.

Have a lovely Bank Holiday Monday. Go and enjoy it properly.

BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY UPDATE

We did think we might open today… but you lot have basically cleaned us out 😂

This has been the busiest weekend we’ve ever had at Waterloo House. Absolutely manic from start to finish, and we honestly can’t thank everyone enough for coming in.

We’re down to four b**r taps still alive out of nine, we’ve run out of bacon, run out of sausages, we’re nearly out of eggs, and with the butcher closed today there’s not much chance of rebuilding brunch stocks in time.

So, sadly, we’ll be CLOSED today for Bank Holiday Monday.

Thank you so much for an unbelievable weekend. Have a lovely Bank Holiday, recover gently, and we’ll be back once we’ve found some b**r and food again.

Rainy season has arrived ☔️

Summer looks like it’s finally disappearing and autumn is definitely on the way.

Waterloo House is warm, dry and already nice and busy for brunch this morning. If your garden plans have been washed out, come and hide from the rain with us instead.

Brunch served until 2.30pm today; coffee, food, drinks and plenty of space to settle in.

Just a heads-up that we’re closed from 6pm today for a private party.

Walk-ins very welcome this morning and afternoon.

And yes, the Waterloo House raincoats have suddenly become considerably more useful.

Tonight. After half price club. It’s gonna be epic.
