I often meet the loved ones of cancer patients who visit my clinic and hear how they can feel so helpless and just want to support their nearest and dearest as best they can. Sometimes its lovely to share a simple and gentle massage technique with them so they can offer comfort when it's needed the most.

Secondary lymphoedema after breast cancer treatment is a result of damage to the lymphatic vessels during surgery or radiotherapy. The normal balance between fluid entering the tisues from the circulatory system and being cleared away by the lymphatic system is disrupted and thus a build up excess fluid in the tissues, usually the upper limb on the affected side in this case (can also affect the breast, chest, shoulder and back), becomes problematic. Patients affected by breast cancer related lymphoedema (BCRL) may notice jewellery, clothing and the skin feeling tighter and the limb may start to feel heavier in the first instance. The British Lymphology Society (BLS) recommends four pillars of management for lymphoedema which are good skin care, compression garments, exercise and manual lymphatic drainage to help the affected areas control the excess oedema and reduce the risk of complications. Here in clinic we offer Fluoroscopy Guided Manual Lymphatic Drainage, which is a gentle and effective protocol for the management of lymphoedema. Lumpectomy or mastectomy surgery, lymph node removal, cording, radiation fibrosis, numbness, tightness, restricted movement...

Just some of the difficulties that breast cancer patients may face as a result of treatment that scar tissue therapy can help and support. Massage for clients going through treatment for breast cancer or navigating the recovery process still considers the WHOLE person. Whilst yes there are fantastic and beneficial techniques to address surgery sites etc. (more in those later), the side-effects of cancer and treatment can affect the whole body both physically and mentally. If the are areas of the body that cannot be massaged at the time of an appointment, there will always be something we can offer. Thorough consultation is key to effective and safe therapy.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the perfect time to put a spotlight on the uses and benefits of massage for cancer patients. Massage can be so beneficial to support comfort and wellbeing whether actively receiving treatment or navigating recovery. The symptoms of the disease and the treatments needed to fight it are both mentally and physically challenging. For many patients, being able to choose complimentary therapy to support them alongside, or in the aftermath of all the necessary medical treatment is a gentle way to improve their wellbeing and quality of life.
