For those who have been missing the classic and traditional jazz we used to hear at the Southend Jazz Club in Southend, get down to The Jazz Centre UK at The Beecroft Art Gallery in Victoria Avenue this Saturday afternoon to hear Bob Dwyer's Bix & Pieces.

Band leader and trombonist Bob Dwyer is a great aficionado of the music of Bix Beiderbecke. He has been playing in jazz bands since the 1950s. Seventeen years with Steve Lane’s Southern Stompers and Red Hot Peppers prepared him for leading his own bands. In 1988 he formed Bob Dwyer’s Hot Six, augmented in 1998 as the Hot Seven. In 2011 the band’s title changed to Bob Dwyer's Bix and Pieces. It is recognised now as one of London’s most versatile swinging traditional jazz bands. But their repertoire isn’t only based on Bix. It also features rhythm ’n’ blues, spirituals and gospel numbers, and evocative tunes from the golden era of jazz right from its early days, including songs by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Walter Donaldson.

Bob Dwyer trombone/vocals
Paula Jackman clarinet/alto sax
Alan Gresty trumpet
Hugh Crozier piano
Marc Easener bass/sousaphone

While the Southend Jazz Club will not be re-starting after the pandemic restrictions are lifted, here's news of a fantastic gig in Southend which is a 'must hear' for any fans of traditional jazz

On Saturday 18th September Tim Huskisson will be bringing an all-star quartet of superb players to The Jazz Centre in the basement of the Beecroft Art Gallery to play a programme of traditional and Dixieland classics from 2pm. In Huskisson’s Jazz Centre Four, Tim, playing clarinet, will be joined by Roger Curphey (bass), Mike ‘Magic’ Henry (trumpet) and Nils Solberg (guitar).

Whereas Roger and Tim will be well known to regulars of Southend Jazz Clubs, Mike Henry brings nearly 20 years experience of playing in the Big Chris Barber Band amongst others. With Nils Solberg, whose style has been described as being somewhere in the region of ‘Django Reinhardt meets Fats Waller and The Nat Cole Trio’, the quartet is a fantastically talented group of nationally renowned musicians playing the sort of traditional music we’ve missed so much in live concerts over the past couple of years.

While seats can be reserved for £10 (https://www.thejazzcentreuk.co.uk/events/live-music-huskissons-jazz-centre-four), promenade entry to the gallery is free.

Tim Huskisson performs live on The Jazz Centre UK stage with Roger Curphey (double bass), Mike ‘MAGIC’ Henry (trumpet) and Nils Solberg (guitar/vocals). Entry £10. Purchase your ticket online or on-the-door.

It feels strange to be at home on a Monday evening when we should be at the club listening to The Hugh Rainey Jazz Band. Here's a gem from 2007 when they were playing at Harwich.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.
