For those who have been missing the classic and traditional jazz we used to hear at the Southend Jazz Club in Southend, get down to The Jazz Centre UK at The Beecroft Art Gallery in Victoria Avenue this Saturday afternoon to hear Bob Dwyer's Bix & Pieces.
Band leader and trombonist Bob Dwyer is a great aficionado of the music of Bix Beiderbecke. He has been playing in jazz bands since the 1950s. Seventeen years with Steve Lane’s Southern Stompers and Red Hot Peppers prepared him for leading his own bands. In 1988 he formed Bob Dwyer’s Hot Six, augmented in 1998 as the Hot Seven. In 2011 the band’s title changed to Bob Dwyer's Bix and Pieces. It is recognised now as one of London’s most versatile swinging traditional jazz bands. But their repertoire isn’t only based on Bix. It also features rhythm ’n’ blues, spirituals and gospel numbers, and evocative tunes from the golden era of jazz right from its early days, including songs by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Walter Donaldson.
