We never want to raise prices, and we know times are hard for everyone right now. But like many pubs across the UK, our running costs have risen massively over the last few years.
Behind every pint poured there are huge costs that most people never see — wages, utilities, rent, business rates, licences, insurance, stock, maintenance, cleaning, and supplier increases that continue to rise month after month.
Over the years, we have always tried to keep our prices at the absolute minimum possible and have absorbed as many increases as we realistically could without passing them directly onto customers.
We are also not a freehold pub, which means we are obligated to purchase our beers directly through the brewery at heavily inflated prices compared to what many independent freehold pubs are able to buy for. Unfortunately, this has a huge impact on our overall costs and margins, and it is not as simple as shopping around and buying barrels from the cheapest distributors — we simply cannot do so.
Just as an example, Guinness is one of our biggest sellers. In order to achieve the kind of 70% gross profit margins people often assume pubs make on drinks, we would realistically need to be charging £11.21 per pint. Clearly, that simply isn’t possible, and hopefully this gives some understanding of the reality behind pub pricing and the pressures many pubs now face.
While people often think pubs make huge profits on drinks, the reality is very different. After all the bills are paid, many pubs are working on very small margins just to keep the doors open.
Even with these changes, we are still forecast to be making a loss on some stock lines, and we have only increased prices where it has become completely essential to do so. We have tried to keep increases to an absolute minimum wherever possible.
This price increase isn’t about making extra profit — it’s about protecting the future of the pub, supporting our staff, and making sure we can continue serving our community for years to come.
We truly appreciate every customer who continues to support us. Every pint, meal, and visit genuinely helps independent pubs like ours survive.
Thank you for understanding and for supporting your local ❤️
