That's the July Church House Sessions done and dusted, massive thanks to Oscar Rowe and Libby Quick who kicked off with a couple of cover versions (including a great version of "Land Locked Blues" by Bright Eyes) prior to launching into their self penned material. With Oscar drinking from his miniature bottle of Johnson's Baby Shampoo (other kids shampoo IS available folks), his voice relaxed and, coupled with some impressive harmonies courtesy of Libby Quick they floated through the remainder of the set.
Libby took to the keys for one track but soon realised that it would sound so much better on her toy piano so switched over to that and starting from scratch, she played the entire song again, receiving a huge round of applause come the end.
Highlights of the night from their set for me included "Yoghurt Flavoured Coated Raisins" and one about Rolf Harris which was performed to the tune of "The Court of King Caractacus", raising a few eyebrows in the process!
After a short break, Bert Miller took to the stage whilst I was out in the car park looking for him, I got the message as I was on the second lap of the graveyard thinking he might have gone for a pre-show walk to calm his nerves!
His subject matter covered various aspects of his life such as the time he lived in Bristol and became quite depressed, missing his family and friends, watching a squirrel falling out of a tree, an ode to a dead fox that lived down his driveway, his Welsh girlfriend who couldn't sing despite thinking she was 'Gods Gift', being a vegan and just about everything in-between!
His between song banter warmed the crowd and come the end of his set, the whole room was eating out of his hand. Bert is a real character and whether you see him as frontman of his band (The Animal Folk) or solo, you know that you're in for a treat, tonight being no exception!
He ended the night handing out FREE downloads of his latest album, a lovely parting gift and one that will be remembered by so many for months to come.
Massive thanks to Church House Inn - Rattery for allowing us to use the pub, Roger Wells for doing the sound and everyone who came to see a fab night of live music in the heart of Rattery.
