Heckington welcomed Sleaford to the village on Sunday and, after a disciplined bowling display, secured a tense four-wicket victory in a game where every run felt priceless.
The visitors were asked to bat first and never really got going against some miserly Hawks bowling.
Sleaford were 45-0 until some sharp fielding from Robbie Townsend (R & J Spencer Plasterers) ran out one of the openers and then the wickets were regular. Chris Morley (MKM) rolled back the years with a superb spell of 2-15 from his 8 overs, while Samuel Elliott (available for sponsorship) was the chief destroyer, finishing with outstanding figures of 5-23 from his full allocation. Henry Read (available for sponsorship) chipped in with two wickets of his own, ensuring Sleaford were bundled out for just 103 in 31 overs.
With only 104 needed, the chase looked straightforward on paper. Cricket, however, had other ideas.
The Hawks lost wickets at regular intervals as Sleaford’s bowlers fought hard to keep the game alive. Samuel Elliott followed up his five-for with a valuable 26, while Silindile Tuntulwana (HC BUILDING BRICKWORK CONTRACTORS LTD) added 25 to keep the scoreboard moving. Connor Jenkinson (L.Stanton Spraying and Decorating) then played what proved to be the innings of the match, top-scoring with 31 and showing plenty of composure.
Just when the nerves were starting to kick in around the boundary, Liam Henry calmly saw the Hawks home with an unbeaten 6, alongside Robbie Townsend, as Heckington reached 104-6 in the 24th over.
A match that showcased disciplined bowling, stubborn batting, and plenty of character. Special mentions go to Samuel Elliott for his five-wicket haul and Connor Jenkinson for top-scoring in a chase where every run carried extra weight.
The victory means even more than just another tick in the win column, as it books Heckington’s place in the MS Trophy Final. Having battled through a series of tough fixtures to reach this stage, the Hawks are now just one win away from silverware.
It was perhaps fitting that a side built on teamwork rather than individual heroics got over the line in such a hard-fought contest. With Elliott starring with the ball, Morley turning back the clock, and Connor Jenkinson top-scoring in a nervy chase, Heckington showed exactly the resilience needed to win knockout cricket.
It wasn’t just about the players that played today, it was about everyone who contributed in previous games to get us to this stage too.
The final awaits, and if the Hawks can bring the same fighting spirit they showed against Sleaford, they’ll head into it believing they can bring the trophy back to Heckington. 🏆🦅
As always a massive thank you to our match sponsors South Lincs Total Recovery Ltd Smith's Construction D.C. Baxter (Motors) Ltd and MKM.
