The finished project, showing the realities of family life, laundry needs drying and kids love slides!

The other thing you might notice as differing from my plan illustration, is a few planting changes. After discussion the client decided they didn't want to retain the existing plants which I had incorporated into the design, so I replaced them with grasses to keep some height.

Photos 2 & 3 show some close ups of the planting and photo 4 shows the garden before it was transformed!

A snap of a planting plan in progress- I worked on this one last summer and got everything planted up for the clients too.

The brief was pretty open, but the clients did say they'd like things to be low maintenance and both child and dog friendly. They also mentioned they were big fans of Acers and a family member gifted them a large specemin for the garden, so that was my starting point.

Scroll back to see the evolution of this hanging basket at the Rising Sun.

I proposed a selection of evergreen perrenials to offer a more sustainable year round display which could be embellished with additional summer annuals for a burst of colour, but would not need completely replanting year on year.

1. This basket is brimming with colour & texture thanks to the evergreen perrenials I planted in late autumn after the annual summer bedding plants had faded.

2. Shows the basket in October when it was freshly planted with an array of plants to maintain inter colour and interest. All sourced locally from Valleyside Garden Centre.

3. At the end of summer the basket was very much past it's best and would not have survived the winter as it was planted solely with annual bedding.

Earlier in the year I grew on these perennial plug plants for a client to help reduce the cost of creating a high impact display for them this summer.

Buying established plants from garden centres can quickly add up, so with my help nurturing little plants larger, I can make the cost smaller!

As I work locally, establishing the plants to conditions here also helps create more resilient plants adapted to the area.

I can offer other propagation and growing on services to help keep your garden project in budget, so please get in touch via email or the enquiry button (available on Instagram) to discuss a plan ๐Ÿ“ƒ๐ŸŒฑ

Another satisfying swipe here; showing a front garden tidy and removal of unwanted rose (the rose has now been rehomed with the clients best wishes)

1-2. Before works-an ornamental grass was running riot and the border felt swamped.
3. Clearance of w**ds and removal of the ornamental including its underground runner roots (rhizomes) to reduce the spread and make the bed more manageable.
4. Rolled rocks out of the way to tackle those pesky grass rhizomes hiding under them! Rose cut back to reduce pressure on the plant prior to removal, then lifted with a fork and placed in water while waiting to be rehomed.
5. Rocks rearranged and returned to the bed to create a natural backdrop for planting.
6. Hellebores & Skimmia added for additional interest. Some existing plants divided and repositioned (this is why they are sulking a bit and flopping).
7. Watered in and mini decorative bark mulch applied to suppress w**ds and regrowth of that pesky grass!

Helping a client re-style their pot filled patio and plan in planting after a tidy and clean to get them back on track (see earlier post).

They wanted white flowers to tie everything together and asked for help with planting ideas to maintain interest in the garden.

1. Digital plan of the garden and proposed pot rearrangement with planting additions. The narrow back border lacked planting height and the whole corner felt like empty space. The pond pot felt awkwardly positioned and was without surrounding plant cover so unlikely to serve much wildlife.

My plan was to create a swathe of pots so that the path through the garden felt smoother and to better connect two areas of patio and stone chippings. I also wanted to surround the pond pot so that it would appeal more to wildlife.

2. An overview of the planting plan and suggestions for further planting of Spring flowering bulbs in the autumn to help with succession.

3-5. Plant list of all identified current plants and proposed additions.

6-8. The realised design after lots of heavy lifting, wrestling with pot bound shrubs and adding some predominantly white flowering evergreen perrenials to begin to fill out the pots.

The client was then planning to add bedding plants (annuals) themselves as an immediate splash of colour.

Swipe to see a recent job helping a client get back on top of their charming pot filled garden after hurting their back.

They asked for a w**d and tidy followed by a patio clean and repoint to get them back on track.

1 & 2 Initial visit (before works).
2. Patio before pressure wash.
3. Patio post pressure wash.
4. Clean patio and w**ded pots.
5. Repointing patio mortar.
6. Site supervisor caught sunbathing!
7. Repointing done (a long job!).

Herbs really taking off in this upcycled pallet planter I made for a Sheffield pub.

NB. If using a pallet for planting, do make sure it hasn't been treated with harmful chemicals. To see how a pallet has been treated for pests etc look out for stamped symbols on the side of the pallet. Avoid pallets that are painted all over and those marked with MB which means the pallet has been chemically treated with Methyl Bromide.

More information can be found with a little searching online, or you can ask someone from the organisation you're getting the pallet from for help and advice.

Taking a look back at the seasonal changes in these budget friendly perennial containers for a local brewery. (These two half barrels were made from a cask no longer suitable for beer production)

Originally planted up in September 2022 with a ยฃ40 plant budget, everything was sourced from Heeley City Farm Garden Centre who not only grow peat free, they also have really reasonable prices!

I really stretched the budget by dividing the plants to fill the space better and leave room for them to establish and spread in the coming years.

(The Spring bulbs and compost were provided by the client so weren't counted in the budget)
