We are so pleased to welcome saxophonist Joel Purnell back to Scarborough Jazz on Wednesday for what will be his first appearance at The Crescent Lounge

Joel is without doubt one of the finest players in the North of England. Expect a varied programme of standards brought to life in the company of MG3 - Mark on piano, Bob on bass, and Chris Sykes guesting on drums. As if that wasn't enough, we have The Jacob Robinson Band in a New Jazz Generation support spot. Saxophonist Jacob is making quite a name for himself as a powerful and mature player.

To fit all this in, the music will start at 8.00pm. All this is only going to cost you £5, so there is no reason to miss what will be a great night.

On October 28th Scarborough Jazz club welcomes back one of the club’s regular guests, saxophonist Joel Purnell. Joel’s playing effortlessly blends a virtuosic technique with an emotive sense of musical expression to create a unique and instantly recognisable voice. Jazz UK said, ‘this is how the contemporary tenor ought to sound’, while Jazzwise Magazine and The Guardian refer to ‘fire breathing solos’ delivered with ‘immaculate taste’ in a style reminiscent of John Coltrane & Michael Brecker.

In addition to being a leading exponent of contemporary jazz, Joel is also Principal Lecturer at Leeds Conservatoire, where he teaches jazz saxophone, improvisation, harmony and performance techniques to the next generation. Tonight he is backed by our MG3.

Our NJG support tonight is a group led by a young saxophonist, Jacob Robinsion, who has been creating quite an impression in recent performances at Scarborough Jazz.

Doors 7.45. Music 8.00. Minimum donation £5. Students and under 18s half price.

Simon Spillett last night captured mid-solo on a Tubby Hayes blues. A wildly entertaining evening with some gorgeous and thrilling playing from Simon, and the trio stepping up to the challenge of accompanying a musician with a fondness for fast tempos.

More sax next week when Joel Purnell joins us, Mark and Chris will return on piano and drums respectively plus Bob on electric bass.

21/10/2026

And we're off... with one of the most fleet-fingered solos we've had at the club since, well since the last time Simon was here.

Music until 10:30 - don't miss this.
