We write in response to the recent report and associated allegations.
Two individuals who have now left the premises due to their visas expiring are greatly missed. Reigate & Banstead Borough Council has referred to them as “overstayers” but failed to mention that both held valid visas until 8 October 2025. Unfortunately, their departure flights were not until 14 October, a delay outside of their control. Importantly, both individuals had confirmed flight tickets prior to the police visit and were permitted to remain until their departure.
On the same day, an incident occurred in the garden area of the premises where three adults, clearly over the age of 30 and accompanied by what we believe were teenagers, purchased alcohol and supplied it to two individuals. This was deliberately done in the garden, apparently to avoid staff visibility. Although CCTV was operational at the time, the individuals positioned themselves in a known blind spot, preventing the activity from being captured.
Regarding the alleged incident on 28 September outside Bell Street Car Park, we must state the obvious: the car park is approximately 200 metres away, and therefore we cannot reasonably be expected to hold CCTV footage of an incident occurring at that location.
With respect to cannabis use, this is unfortunately widespread and not unique to our premises. We have consistently noted strong odours emanating from the left-hand side of the building, coincidentally the same area associated with the complainants raising concerns about noise and smoke.
There appears to be a sustained and targeted campaign against Mr Chopra by neighbouring individuals, some of whom have known connections to Reigate & Banstead Borough Council. This campaign appears aimed at forcing the closure of the pub. To be clear, this will not happen. We are increasingly frustrated by individuals who choose to live adjacent to a licensed premises and then complain about the very nature of its operation akin to standing next to a fire and complaining about the heat.
We have now instructed a solicitor, as the report contains multiple statements that are either outside the council’s remit or demonstrably false. Additionally, we are aware that a Facebook post has been circulated and used by certain individuals to mock the owner’s name and make unfounded accusations of drug dealing. This behaviour is deeply concerning and has enabled racist commentary. We strongly suggest diversity and equality training for those who appear unable to accept that individuals of darker skin tones do not derive their income from criminal activity.
Finally, should there be any concerns regarding modern slavery, all are welcome to speak directly with our staff all of whom are British citizens. We are more that sure that an 8 hour day on the national living wage is not modern slavery. (Or should it be?)
