Pulborough Fight Their Way to the Double Fours Area Final!

After a tough couple of weeks for results at the club, the highlights really do shine out!

Wednesday the 27th May saw Pulborough travel to Southbourne for the next round of the Brookes Motors League at 2pm. 2 triples played 18 ends on the artificial carpet and the home side didn't seem to have an answer for the strong team who played out of their skins to beat them by 45 shots to 18, taking both rinks and all 6 points, unheard of for Pulborough in all their years playing in the competition! Skip Steve Adsett, with Nicola Pells as Lead and James Barber as 2 scored heavily throughout, taking 5 shots on the 11th end to finish 21 shots to 9, but top rink went to Captain Marc Pells, with his Daughter Poppy as Lead and his Son Jacob as 2 by 24 shots to 9, quite the family dynamic!
The West Sussex Bowls League match away at Maltravers didn't go in Pulborough's favour, but the friendly ladies rink who played alongside had a great day, winning by 18 shots to 8 and showing the men how it was done!
On Tuesday the 2nd June 2 triples from Pulborough travelled to Middleton for the Brookes Motors League and one team was victorious! Skip Jacob Pells, with Alison Forster as Lead and Richard Burden as 2 battled their way to a 16/15 win to sn**ch a valuable 2 League points.
A second visit to Southbourne BC was equally as positive on Weds 3rd, when Pulborough played the semi-final of the County Abergavenny Men's Double Fours, where one rink plays at home and the second away. The away team struggled, but still managed to get 10 shots on the board and combined with the 29 shots achieved at home, by Alfie Fuller, James Barber, Dave Cobbold and Steve Adsett, it was enough to top the 28 shots the combined teams from Southbourne could score, giving Pulborough a pass into the Area Final on the 17th June, home and away against Worthing Pavilion.
A 3 triple match against Fishbourne in the BML on Thursday yielded just 1 more League point for Pulborough for a drawn rink, skipped by Marc Pells, but it's still early days with a further 7 matches to play, 5 of which are at home.
After 2 consecutive defeats at the hands of Pulborough in the last 2 weeks it was Southbourne's turn to steal the home win in the WSBL match on Saturday the 6th June, but Pulborough took the game to them in horrendous conditions and showed some skill on the artificial surface. The return match on Sat 1st of Aug will be more on Pulborough's terms!
The Sussex Under 25's had a practice day at Worthing Pavilion for the girls Amy Rose competition on Sunday the 7th June. The girls played against the Worthing Pavilion ladies over 12 ends in pairs, with Pulborough represented by Poppy Pells and the Under 25 boys played the Pavilion men, with Jacob Pells representing Pulborough. The girls came out on top in their first match, beating the home side 11/8 and the boys also won against Pavilion 11/10. The second session saw boys v girls with the boys winning 11/4. The atmosphere was electric, with the Pulborough Juniors coming away with yet more vital experience that will help them climb the County ladder in the future!
The Sussex County Ladies played the first round of the County "Johns" competition, comprising of the top 24 County Ladies for Sussex against Middlesex at Worthing Pavilion on Saturday the 7th June in torrential rain and gale force winds, but they hunkered down and showed grit and determination to beat Middlesex by a healthy margin! Pulborough was represented in the John's squad by Jane Gray, who played on rink 4.
Next week will see visits by the Rotary Club of Pulborough and Storrington and the Pulborough Sea Scouts, matches away at Sutton and Tarring and the Club Drawn Pairs on Sunday, another busy week!

Pulborough Win Round 2 of the County Double Fours!

A mixed bag of results for Pulborough BC saw success at County level and players finding their feet in the Leagues!
First up this week was an away match on the tricky green at Fishbourne in the mixed Brooke's Motors League on Wednesday afternoon from 2pm. 2 triples played and one was victorious! Skip and Captain of the day, Malcolm Gray, led his triple of Melvin Green and Jane Gray to a convincing 20 shots to 12 win, after storming ahead to 15/0 up on the 8th end, by putting up short jacks, only to be halted when the home side got the jack and bowled it full-length - a massive challenge on a heavy green! The final score was 26/39 to Fishbourne, but Pulborough did steal 2 valuable League points to help in their quest to climb the League table!
At 6pm on the same day, 2 rinks of men played the County Double Rinks, or Abergavenny as it is known. One rink played away at Midhurst, whilst the other stayed at the home venue to play the second team from Midhurst. The away side of Jacob Pells, James Barber, Marc Pells and Ray Hall fought hard to keep the scores close, resulting in 12/12. With the combined score giving the result, it fell to the home team to deliver the win and they certainly did by 32 shots to 4! Steve Adsett, Dave Cobbold, Alfie Fuller and another junior player never really gave their opponents a chance, winning 14/18 ends and outclassing their opposition. Pulborough now move into the 3rd round and will face Southbourne away next Wednesday on their artificial green, quite the challenge!
On Saturday T 10AM Jane Gray played her third round match in the Sussex Ladies Champion of Champions against Nicola Kidd away at Midhurst BC. After losing at that venue the previous year it was great to get a positive result. Nicola played a fantastic game, but struggled to find her feet, allowing Jane to pull away and take the win by 21 shots to 5, which isn't reflective of the quality bowling on show from both players. The next match will be at home to either the ladies champion from Chichester or Crablands before the 29th of June.
An away match in the West Sussex Bowls League for the Pulborough men at 10.30 am on Saturday proved to be a tough task, with just 2 rinks winning out of 4. Top rink went to Skip John Brown, with Alfie Fuller as Lead, Dave Fuller as 2 and Ian Younger as 3, 22/9. The final score was 59/65 to Worthing, but 4 League points travelled home with the Pulborough players for the 2 rink wins!
With temperatures soaring, Sunday's Open Day hangs in the balance, but next week will see an away BML match and the County Double Rinks away at Southbourne on Wednesday and the next WSBL match away at Maltravers on Saturday from 2pm.

A Clean Sweep for Pulborough on the County Stage!

Two mixed League matches, numerous County Competitions and the PC Cup this week leave the Pulborough players needing a few days rest!
First up was a Brookes Motors mixed League match away at Bognor on Tuesday at 2pm. 2 triples played on a difficult green with close results. Skip and Captain, Marc Pells, with Sylvia Smith as Lead and Melvin Green as two took the game to the home side leading from the off, only running out of steam on the last 3 ends to finish just 2 points from the win. Pulborough go away empty handed this time, but vow to get their revenge on home turf in June!
The Abergavenny County Double Fours against Witterings on Wednesday evening helped to cheer the players up, with both teams performing well despite getting thoroughly soaked! The away rink of Jacob Pells, James Barber, Marc Pells and Ray Hall as Skip won 12/18 ends to finish on 13/9, whilst the home side of Alfie Fuller as Lead, another junior as 2, Dave Cobbold as 3 and Steve Adsett as Skip did the damage in the first 6 ends, going 14/0 up, keeping the pressure on throughout to win by 27 shots to 12, giving an overall score for home and away of 40/21 to Pulborough! The next round will be on Weds 20th against Midhurst BC.
An away BML at Petworth on their artificial green in wet, blowy conditions yielded a similar result to Bognor, with a definite home advantage to those experienced on that surface, but the home match will be a different story!
After great runs in the Knockout PC Cup in previous years, 2026 was not Pulborough's year, narrowly missing out away at Worthing Beach House Park, winning 2 rinks convincingly, but losing the other 2 by a higher margin. Top rink went to Skip John Brown, with Melvin Green as Lead, Dave Fuller as 2 and Ian Younger as 3, 21 shots to 7.
Other County competition results saw Ray Knight, Terry Chriss, Ian Younger and John Brown win their first round of the County Senior Fours 22/10, they will face Tarring Priory away on Tuesday in the next round. John and Ian had yet more success winning their first National Senior Pairs match away at Southwick 16/14 and Jane Gray and Ray Hall are through to the next round of the County Mixed Pairs after beating Bognor away on Friday evening by 3 shots on the last end!
Pulborough were also well represented in the Under 25's County team, with 4 players taking part in a friendly away at Burgess Hill on Sunday morning. Alfie Fuller, Poppy Pells, Jacob Pells and one other played some fantastic shots and showed their skills within the team, congratulations to all of them for representing both their County and their Club on the County stage!
Next week will see a visit from Pulborough Brownies on Monday evening, an away BML match at Fishbourne on Wednesday afternoon, followed by the next round of the County Double Fours in the evening, the first of 14 West Sussex Bowls League matches away at Worthing Pavilion on Saturday and an Open Day for the public to come and try bowls at Pulborough on Sunday from 2-6pm - everyone is welcome!

Teams Fight for Top Spot in Pulborough's Mike Wood Cup!

As the season builds, Pulborough Bowls Club players use the club friendlies to hone their skills ready for forthcoming League matches and competitions.
First up was a 3 triple friendly at home to Cranleigh BC, a strong club from Surrey with several County connections, but they found themselves at the mercy of a home side who found their green and took the game to the visitors!
The Captain-of-the-day's rink, skipped by Jane Gray, with L.A Feldmanis as Lead and Paul Smith as 2, started slowly, matching their opponents scores until the 8th end when they all found form and pulled away, finishing 14 shots ahead! Ian Younger, Terry Chriss and Sylvia Smith took 15 shots in the last 5 ends to finish 20 shots clear on 25/5, but top rink went to Past Captain John Brown, with Ray Knight as Lead and Alison Forster as 2, after taking 7 shots on the 14th end to confirm their trajectory, winning by 28 shots to just 7! Pulborough finished 74/19, a fantastic, if one-sided win over a lovely bunch of bowlers!
Friday saw a trip to our friends in Horsham for a second friendly at 2pm. All 3 triples saw a win, with Top rink honours going to Skip Ray Hall, with Dave Soutar and Melvin Green in support. They led from the 4th end, only allowing the home side to take 7 ends and finishing on a convincing 20 shots to 11! The final score was 57/39 to Pulborough.
Sunday the 10th saw the return of the Mike Wood Memorial Cup. 4 drawn triples played 3 matches of 7 ends against different opponents, with the scores being carried over as a running total. 4th place went to Ivan, Sylvia and junior player Poppy, third went to Steve Adsett, Dave Fuller and Pauline Adsett , second was Jacob Pells, Paul Smith and one of our Junior players and the Mike Wood Cup, presented by Richard Wood, in the presence of his Mum, Anne Wood, went to Nicola Pells, Alfie Fuller and Dave Cobbold as Skip, after scoring 22 shots in their last match to take the win, congratulations everyone! A buffet and drinks followed the bowls, with players making the most of their Sunday afternoon.
Next week will see two Brooke's Motors League matches away at Bognor and Petworth, followed by the first round of the knockout PC Cup away at Worthing Beach House Park on Sunday from 2pm, another busy week for Pulborough BC!

It's A Hat Trick of Wins for Pulborough BC!

With the matches coming thick and fast for Pulborough Bowls Club it's all positive out on the green!

The first of three friendlies this week saw Pulborough host our friends from Sutton Bowls Club for a 4 triple, 18 end match from 6pm on Wednesday the 29th.

A strong first half saw two triples ahead for the home side and two battling to get their noses in front and by the final end 3/4 were victorious by a total of 81 shots to Sutton's 49! Jane Gray's rink scored a 6 on the 9th end to bring them back into contention and only lost 2 of the remaining ends to finish 7 shots up, whilst Terry Chriss, Linda Meadowcroft and Jacob Pells did the damage in the first half and hung on to win by 20/12. Top rink, by some margin, went to Skip Steve Adsett, with Alison Forster as Lead and one of our Junior players as 2, who took 15 shots in the second half to increase their lead to 25/7! A fantastic match, followed by Supper, drinks and good company!

Next up on Friday was an away match at Stedham in Surrey. 3 triples played on a tricky green for the first match of their season in lovely sunny conditions. Malcolm Gray's team of L.A Feldmanis and Sylvia Smith had a fantastic battle from start to finish, just piping their opposition by 1 shot on the last end! Skip Jane Gray, with Mike Ryan as Lead and Paul Smith as 2, pulled it back from 9/11 down on the 13th end to take the win by 16 shots to 11, whilst Top rink went to Ian Younger, Alison Forster and Nicola Pells by 7 shots, 19/12. The final result was 56/39 to Pulborough, topped off by a fantastic Supper laid on by the home side.

Sunday saw 4 triples travel to Henfield for 18 ends of friendly bowls under sunny skies. 3/4 rinks came out on top with the best result going to Skip Steve Adsett with Poppy Pells as Lead and Jane Gray as 2, after taking 8 shots in the first 4 ends and going into tea at halfway 13/4 up! The last 9 ends saw a further 9 shots added to their tally resulting in a 22/10 win for the away side and an overall win for Pulborough 70/58, another clean sweep for the week!

Next week will see a home match against Cranleigh on Thursday, an away match at Horsham on Friday and the Mike Wood Cup on Sunday, another busy week at Pulborough BC!

It's All Positive For Pulborough BC!

With the season and weather both hotting up, the Pulborough players are beginning to find their feet!
Pulborough Bowls Club began it's week with the first of 14 mixed Brookes Motor's League matches at home to Middleton BC on Tuesday afternoon. 2 League triples and a friendly played 18 ends of competitive bowls against last season's victors, with the friendly rink, skipped by Melvin Green, out-playing their opponents from the start, winning by 19 shots to 13. Ray Hall's triple of Sylvia Smith and Jacob Pells battled their way back from 8/3 down on the 8th end to match their opponents 12/12 by full time, which gave the second rink a fighting chance and after a slow start they took off, scoring heavily and winning by 23 shots to 12, securing 5/6 League points for Pulborough - a fantastic result against the League champions!
Saturday's friendly against Worthing Beach House Park was always going to be tough up against some skilled, attacking bowlers, but the Pulborough players more than held their own. 5 triples played 18 ends in glorious conditions, with the green speeding up with every wood!
Dave Cobbold's team had a strong second half to win by 20/14, whilst joint Top Rink went to Steve Adsett, Brian Maughan and Ray Knight by 14 shots and Nicola Pells, Ian Younger and John Brown who also finished up 14 shots ahead 31 shots to 17. Pulborough managed 3/5 triples and took the overall win by 103 shots to 74!
Sunday saw Pulborough host the first of two Open Days for the public to come and try bowls for free, with the green filling up throughout the 4 hours with both children and adults, all wanting a taste of what Pulborough BC has to offer, both on and off the green and more importantly the club gained some important new talent for the season ahead!
This week will see three more friendlies at home to Sutton on Wednesday, away at Stedham on Friday and away at Henfield on Sunday, a fantastic line-up!
