Wow! The last poetry fest was 2 years ago and now it’s literally just around the corner… we are t minus 2 days away!

To get excited I’m dropping some snaps of the gorgeous warm vibes from the last one. A night full of smiles, super talented wordsmiths, and COMMUNITY! I think my favourite part of Word of Plym is that everyone who walks in helps to make it the welcome, supportive, community space that it is.

So, if you are wanting to jump up on the mic as a spoken word veteran, or as a budding performing poet then here is your sign and glimpse at the warm space.

If you are a regular to Word of Plym then remember to sign up before Sunday! If you are newcomer then sign up is from 6:30. I can’t wait to see you all.

Don’t forget to come along - to perform or to listen to the amazing poets including performances from and our headline,

We are in for a treat 🎉

So excited to see so many of you getting hyped for our headline Maria Ferguson!

Maria will be selling copies of her book Swell on the night.

Maria Ferguson’s second poetry collection is a raw and powerful documentation of one woman’s experience of becoming a mother. Against a backdrop of the sounds and sensations of daily life, she longs for her own mother’s embrace, observes as her body changes and charts a course through loss and wilting house plants toward recovery, empowerment, and renewal.

Please make sure to stick around to talk and socialise afterwards and grab yourself a copy of her amazing poetry collection.

Can’t wait to see you all! ❤️

So honoured and excited to announce that our headliner is none other than Maria Ferguson!

Tender, direct, and winningly witty, SWELL distils the poet’s complex feelings surrounding family and domesticity, exploring the contending weight and levity felt as she contemplates a thrillingly unfamiliar new chapter. Ferguson is a poet as alert to the absurd as to the shattering, and these are large-hearted poems, full of life and thought. Together, they invite the reader to join them in a search for self-acceptance, for freedom from shame, and for a path to stability in increasingly uncertain times.

She will be rounding off the night with her beautiful words, and performing exclusively at Word of Plymouth as part of so be sure to get this one down on your calendars.

I cannot wait to welcome her to the stage and she cannot wait to meet all of you ❤️

Alright loves?

I thought I would introduce you to our first guest poet and wonderful wordsmith, Beanz!

Beanz is an OG to Word of Plym, and I’m excited to give him the stage for a longer slot to highlight the true craftsmanship of his words.

Beanz is a socially engaged performance poet with a background in photojournalism, film making, music and sound. Musical references, interpolation, imagery and the audible underpinning everything from the deeply personal to the ludicrous, historic and profane. Imagine John Cooper Clarke, T.S Eliot, and Pam Ayres all falling down the same flight of stairs.

I can’t wait to see what he’s got in store for and I hope you come along to!

The night will run from 7-9:30 - slightly longer than our regular spoken word night to give plenty of space for open mic slots and a special headline act who will finish off the night. Mark it in your calendars and be sure to stay!

Check back in the week to hear about the headliner ❤️

The news of the century you have all been eagerly awaiting is finally here!

I am honoured to announce that Word of Plymouth is once again apart of and will be running on the 12th of April.

Even more exciting is that we have a double bill - featuring one of our beloved OGs on the mic and a very special headline appearance from who you hopefully know from her wonderful book Swell!

Plus, of course, open mic performance slots that feature YOU! If you are a returning poet please message ahead. If you are a newcomer then sign up is on the night from 6:30 (and I would get in early because it’ll be BUSY!)

I am so looking forward to this. If you have plans then cancel them. If you don’t the now you do. April 12th 7-9:30.

See you there! ❤️

Hey loves! Just to say there will NOT be a poetry night in March because I am inundated with Uni deadlines and burned out. However, April is EXCITING and will take place on the 12th rather than the 19th, so please mark this in your calendar. It will be a very special evening - more on this soon.

Poetry community! Our little home that has held us so beautifully for the past few years needs our help. Please consider donating to this fundraiser to keep the space alive for us and for the wider creative community that the Bread and Roses brings together.

It would truly be heartbreaking to lose this hub in Plymouth.

On that note - should we make the next poetry night a fundraiser of sorts? I’ll get my thinker thinking and try to figure out how best to do this.

Much love x

Right you lot - we are BACK! October 19th will be our first Word of Plymouth this year! I know you have all been on the edge of your seats, poetry in hand, ready to take to the stage again… and I cannot wait to welcome you all. That being said… we have some changes so please read on! ☺️

Firstly, I would like to make the very exciting announcement that the wonderful woman and wordsmith, Laura (aka ) will be coming on board as a cohost. She will run the nights every other month, and I am so happy to be sharing the beautiful space we’ve all created with her. I hope you remember her from previous nights she’s performed, but if not I know you will absolutely love her! ❤️

Secondly, and very importantly, the way the night runs is going to be slightly different. So please, if you are wanting to perform then read this bit! We have such an amazing cohort of returning poets who really give the night a sense of community. However, I would like to reserve the second half of the night for new comers, and give budding performers a chance to take the stage! To keep this possible I would like to ask if you are a returning (especially regular) performer, that you message me and book in a poetry slot ahead of the night. I will have about 6 slots reserved for our regulars - all of which are 10 mins each. For the newcomers - the second half will still run as an open mic and sign up will be from about 6:30. I am hoping this change will give everyone a fair chance to perform and won’t impact the beautiful vibe that the nights have offered so far. This is an early plan, and could change if it isn’t flowing, but please give us time to work out the kinks! 🙏🏼

Feel free to message with any questions, or book a slot if you are one of the oldskool crowd.

Much love to you all,

Megan and Laura 🥰
