Hi Folks

It's all a bit,,, out there isn't it? I would really suggest (well I would wouldn't I) coming to the Folly Upstairs in Petersfield on Manday, 5th October for a cracking night of professional comedy. Let your hair down and laugh your way into the week. It'll genuinly make you feel good.

Opening the show sees and old friend back at the club. Kevin Precious is a wonderfully laid back comic, which does make you wonder what he was like as a teacher who was head of an RE department many years ago. If it was anything like his stage show then that's the class I would rather have had when I was at school all those years ago.

On in the middle is the electrifying Samantha Day. After three decades as an accountant and single mum, Samantha's been freed from the city and she's really hit her stride, as a truly original act who's progressing ripidly higher and higher on the circuit. Buckle in people, she's awesome.

Closing the show is Andrew O'Neill, an award-winning non-binary British comedian, musician, and best-selling author known for their counter-cultural, surreal, and heavy-metal-infused stand-up. They really will grab you at the beginning and take you on a journey you couldn't have imagined. World class, all round lovely human being and damned funny.

Comedy at the Folly — Monday 7th September

Hi Folks,

This month we’re bringing something a little different to the Folly on Monday 7th September — a very special performance from Tiff Stevenson, who will be performing her work-in-progress show, Lucky.

It’s about luck, b***s, war, addiction and entropy. A chimera of ideas, funny jokes and physicality.

Tiff has been treading the boards around the UK and overseas for just over 20 years, and her skills have led to appearances on TV shows including House of Games, Mock the Week and People Just Do Nothing. Tiff is the real deal: bright, funny and sharp. She brings all the skills she’s honed over more than two decades to our club this coming Monday 7th.

Supporting Tiff is Gilli Apter, a rising force on the UK comedy circuit. Gilli brings a sharp, playful style and an infectious stage presence to every performance. Known for her witty observations, relatable storytelling and fearless approach to comedy, she has quickly established herself as a distinctive and exciting voice, winning audiences over with her warmth, energy and brilliantly offbeat perspective.

Hi Folks,

Monday 3rd August brings us another wonderful night of professional comedy at The Folly Upstairs.

Our opening act is Mary Bourke, an Irish comic who has her own BBC comedy series – Mary Bourke: Who Cares? As well as being an accomplished comedian who has performed all over the world, Ms Bourke is also a respected comedy writer. She is perhaps most famous for having written "the joke that was heard around the world", namely: "My name is Shazia Mirza – at least that's what it says on my pilot's licence..."

In the middle, we're delighted to welcome back an old friend of the club, Erich McElroy. Now a British citizen, Erich was originally from Seattle, USA, and brings an insightful take on life in the UK. While his six full Edinburgh shows have taken a turn towards the political ("This is political stand-up at its best." – BroadwayBaby), it's his "modest, slightly bookish charm and genuine affection for the UK" (Chortle) that makes him stand out.

Closing the show is Joe Bor, comedian, writer and actor, and a regular at comedy clubs around the country. As well as amiable observational stand-up, Joe also performs as "posh idiot climber" Jasper Cromwell Jones (for our regulars – yes, it's him!).

With stereotypical upper-class innocent stupidity, Jasper recounts his pampered life, his confusion with the natural world, and how even the hardest adventures can be made easier if you pay local children to carry you.

I'm so looking forward to this show!

Doors open and food is available from 6.30pm. Arrive as early as you can so you can relax and enjoy your meal before the show.

The show starts at 8pm and will be finished by around 10pm.

Hi Folks,

We’re looking forward to another brilliant night of laughter at The Folly on Monday 6th July — great food, fantastic comedians, and the best comedy venue in town. The beautiful vaulted upstairs room, with its warm candlelit cosiness, it really is something special.

Opening the show is Dave Chawner, a number 1 best selling author, award-winning stand up and presenter. He’s presented for BBC's Tomorrow's World and has appeared on BBC, ITV & Channel 4 on such shows as BBC Breakfast, Lorraine, Loose Women, The Jeremy Vine Show, Morning Live and is a regular on Good Morning Britain as well as appearances on Radio 1, Radio 2 & Radio 4. As a stand up comic, Dave has performed 7 solo shows at The Edinburgh Fringe and received an award for his show Normally Abnormal at The Houses Of Parliament in 2014.

In the middle spot is Alexis Coward, an awkwardly charming and prone to more embarrassing mishaps than anyone else would admit. Alexis crafts stories that feel familiar, yet bonkers. Her comedic style is delightfully unpredictable: think “British observational storytelling” meets “midlife crisis". Alexis brings disarming charm to her performances and her onstage presence has been praised for making audiences feel like long-lost friends.

Closing the show is the wonderful Ben Norris, a highly experienced and hugely well-respected stand-up. He’s been performing comedy since 1993 and is renowned for his incredibly relaxed stage persona and his innate ability to improvise as well as deliver sharply crafted material. Ben’s TV credits include: “Mock the Week” (BBC 1), “The Comedy Store” (Paramount and Comedy Central), “Never mind the Buzzcocks” (BBC 2), “They think it’s all over” (BBC 2).

Hi Folks,

We’re looking forward to another brilliant night of laughter at The Folly on Monday 1st June — great food, fantastic comedians, and the best comedy venue in town.

Set in the beautiful vaulted upstairs room, with its warm candlelit cosiness, it really is something special.

Opening the show is Neil McFarlane, who began his comedy career in Scotland over 20 years ago and remains a regular at the highly regarded Stand Comedy Clubs in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Neil’s dry, laconic style and relaxed delivery have made him a popular MC and support act across the British Isles and beyond.

In the middle spot is Andrew Watts, one of the most talked-about new acts on the comedy circuit. His distinctive style and original material mark him out as one to watch. Formerly a solicitor in London, Andrew is now a full-time comedian and writer based in Wiltshire. His debut Edinburgh show, I Wish I Could Be Like Andrew Watts, received excellent reviews, and he’s rapidly building a strong reputation on the club circuit.

Closing the show is Ronnie Golden, whose CV reads like a who’s who of British comedy and rock ’n’ roll.

As a teenage guitarist, Ronnie worked with musical legends including Tom Jones, Scott Walker, Engelbert Humperdinck and even David Bowie before forming cult late-70s renegade band Fabulous Poodles, whose album Mirror Stars outsold both The Clash and The Jam in America in the early 80s.

Within weeks of the band’s demise, he became a founding member of the legendary Comic Strip alongside Rik Mayall, Ben Elton, French and Saunders, and Alexei Sayle, and appeared as Buddy Holly in the first series of The Young Ones. A regular contributor to Spitting Image, Ronnie finally scored a number one single with The Chicken Song / We’re Scared of Bob.

A refined gentleman of music and comedy, Ronnie will close the evening with charm, wit and effortless skill.

Hi Folks

We're looking forward to another great night of laughter here at the Folly on Bank Holiday Monday, 4th May. Great food and fantastic comedians at the best venue in town! A candle lit cosiness in the beautiful vaulted upstairs room it really is something special.

Opening the show is Karen Bayley from Birmingham who has been on the circuit for over two decades. She made a name for herself early on in her career reaching the semi-final of the prestigious BBC New Comedy Awards and was later crowned the winner of the 2001 Komedia New Act prize. Delightfully saucy, her friendly and confident stage presence, combined with a killer wit, an infectious giggle and some devastating one-liners make her a comedic force to be reckoned with.

On in the middle is the wonderfully silly El Baldiniho, a magician and prop comedian performing on TV, in comedy clubs, at festivals and at corporate events across the UK and beyond. Recently seen on Britain’s Got Talent (where he got 4 yeses) he can also be seen headlining family friendly comedy events across the UK.

Closing the show is the Legend which is Martin Davis who skids and bounds across the stage, strung up and tugged around by unknown forces, firing off a relentless rapid-fire assault that hits every corner of the room. Martin is the Jolt Cola of the circuit. Consumer advice would read: connect up the microphone, shout “clear!” and stand well back!

Hi folks,

Looking forward to seeing you all on Bank Holiday Monday, 6th April. We’ve got a brilliant show lined up (don’t we always?) and the usual great atmosphere in the best mid-sized space in Petersfield – The Folly Upstairs. We’re pretty lucky here in Petersfield: loads of great venues, something always going on, and a comedy club that’s been running 27 years. Over that time we’ve seen new acts become big names, and some still drop in to try out new material… so you never know who you might spot before they’re on TV a few years later. Speaking of which, our closer has done a fair bit of telly – read on…

Opening the night is Canadian comic Darryl Purvis. Originally from Antigonish (great name), Nova Scotia, he did a business degree to keep his parents happy before getting on with what he really wanted to do – comedy. He’s recorded his own TV special and performed across North America, playing the best (and some of the worst) gigs going. Now he’s in little ol’ England and loving it.

In the middle, rising star and superb storyteller Elle Bert. With quick wit and natural charm, she’ll take you by the hand and lead you on a hilarious wander down the garden path.

Closing the show is Bobby Mair – Darryl’s mate, and yes, another Canadian (I can’t help it, they’re funny). Bobby’s been in the UK for years, headlining up and down the country, and has appeared on shows including The Hour, Russell Howard’s Good News, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, 8 Out of 10 Cats and more.

It’s going to be a superb night, as always.

Doors open 6:30, show starts around 8pm, and we’re wrapped up by about 10. If you’re eating, try to arrive in time to order and finish before the show – around 7 ideally, but no stress, just get here!

Tickets are £25 including a main meal and reserved seating.
Unreserved, ticket-only entry is £10 on the door from 6:30.
