Hello you lovely lot! A brief message from the 'other side" These great people came to film us for a film that's going to be released about independent music venues. It's called "The Long & Winding Road." They're keen to get hold of any film footage out there for The Cellar in action. They are particularly keen on live music, however club footage too is also welcome. If you have any, best not post the actual footage on this thread, you can send it to [email protected] via wetransfer. We'd love to hear from you with this anyway. It will be a much appreciated trip down memory lane and it would be great to be featured more in the doc!

Love this! Thank you Nightshift Magazine We'll be keeping a close eye on hearing all the lovely times, they happened so they will always be.

Great to see so many Cellar photos and memories across Facebook etc today. If people want to post theirs on this thread so they're all together and people can see them in one place, please do.

I've got so many from over the past 30+ years, starting when I read in a Freshers guide to avoid the place as it was (actual quote) "a rough house" and decided it must be worth investigating.

I even got (temporarily) banned once for allowing a reviewer to call the place 'seedy' (it was, and in the best kind of way).

Fave gigs would have to include THAT Foals show (utter bedlam, utterly brilliant and made all the better for the nature of the venue); seeing Young Knives for the first time, still called Ponyclub, who stopped a song ('Easy Peasy', I think) halfway through to launch into Throbbing Gristle's 'Subhuman' and going over to talk to them afterwards and finding out they were big Numan fans and played an obscure Tubeway Army song for me next gig. Seeing Stornoway for the first time and seeing Brian spend half the set talking about things that eat wasps. The Original Rabbit Foot Spam Band's closing set at the Punt - an absolute riot, complete with stage invasion. Seeing The Nightingales and getting to meet Fliss Kitson afterwards - the best drummer on the planet and a lovely person. And maybe my favourite memory - going to see a terrible covers band called Rock Museum back in the early 90s, only because they featured three ex members of Gary Numan's band. Genuinely awful, but spent half the evening drunkenly talking at drummer Ced Sharpley until even I realised the look in his eyes was sheer terror.

Get sharing. Make this thread a fitting monument to a legendary venue.

The CELLAR – Notice of Closure
___________________

We are very sad to inform you that The Cellar closed its doors for the last time on 11th March 2019. After crunching the numbers, a thousand times over, the Hopkins family, who have run the independent music venue, for nearly 40 years, have sadly come to conclusion that they cannot continue.

After months of negotiations, we would have loved to have been able to take the landlord's final rent offer, but it came too late. What’s more, even with a vaguely do-able rent agreed, there were no guarantees on the time frame of the building work, which required access to the shop above and various structural considerations. Essentially, the whole process took far longer than we were expecting, and we simply could not keep operating under these conditions.

We are grateful to the landlords for recognising the cultural importance of the venue, and we hope that we have saved this space from becoming a store room. Moreover, we hope that the space, in some shape or form, will continue as a live music venue. Over 2000 people donated to the Cellar Forever campaign, showing that the people of Oxford really care about what The Cellar stands for, and the values it embodies – independence, individuality and creativity. The amazing £92K that we raised will be returned to everyone's bank accounts (For *further details on what will happen to some of the rewards that have been donated please read on to the end).

This is a sad time for Oxford's city centre, with so many vacant shops and bars all around us, and we hope that our closure will be noted as part of the situation that is eroding our cultural communities. We have tried hard to save our beloved venue, but hopefully its closure will fuel further discussion between landlords and the council to stem further destruction of our beloved city. If given the opportunity, our dream for the future would be to turn The Cellar into a Community Interest Company, a social enterprise whereby any profits would be ploughed back into the company.

We’d like to thank all of our Cellar Forever supporters from the bottom of our hearts. You guys have kept us going through what has been a very tough two years. We’d also like to thank the brilliant people at Crowdfunder for being so supportive and understanding. Lastly, thank you to the Music Venue Trust who gave us so much valuable advice and guidance. Without them, we certainly wouldn't have come this far.

Who knows what the future holds for our beloved, sweaty little Cellar! It’s a unique space, and it’s been a privilege to run this special venue for the past two decades.

Best Wishes
Tim and the Cellar Team

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT WITH MY MONEY AND THE PRIZES I’VE BID FOR?

All money donated will be fully refunded to all of our amazing supporters within days of this announcement.

In terms of the T-shirts, posters, benefit gigs and names on the wall, sadly as the campaign to save the Cellar was ultimately unsuccessful these rewards will not be created

However, to leave this on a positive note, we feel that those of you who were excited to have won some of the individual rewards, should not have to miss out on them.

We asked Music Venues Trust if they would be up for setting up a Crowdfunder page so that - with special thanks to Philip Selway – we can now proudly donate the Radiohead snare drum to Music Venues Trust to re-host that Crowdfunder raffle. This means that people who entered before (once they have received their refund from the Cellar) can instead re-enter this new raffle to still be in with a chance of winning this amazing reward. Any money generated from this will go to the support the Music Venues Trust with the incredible work they do in campaigning and helping other struggling music venues around the country.

In addition, the following gifts listed below, have been very kindly kept open by the reward providers listed below, for the registered winners to still claim them. Again, once the reward winners have been refunded from the Cellar campaign, all you have to do is donate the exact same figure to the Music Venues Trust Crowdfunder. Vez from The Cellar Forever Campaign will get in touch with you personally about this, and to arrange how you will receive your reward.

Glass Animals Bumper Signed Bundle
Nightshift Cover Star
Safe House Studio Half Day Recording Session
Rough Trade Records Mystery Bundle
Ninja Tune Records Mystery Bundle
Domino Records Mystery Goodie Bundle
Pair of Tandem Festival Tickets
Special Truck Fest Tix Plus Backstage Bundle
Death of Hi-Fi to remix your track
Upcycled Sounds Half Day Studio Session
Band Photoshoots by Glasshertzz Photo

We’d like to thank all of the above organisations and people above, for these donations and keeping them open so that winners may be able to still receive their prizes, and the Cellar can thank the Music Venues Trust properly for all the free help they gave us and give others.

For anyone else interested here’s the Music Venues Trust crowdfunder. They are doing great things:

Dear Supporters
You will have had an email message late last night saying "We did it". This is a generic email sent out from Crowdfunder when a campaign ends and they have reached their funding target. If we can accept the funding or not still remains to be seen. We will be back with an update very soon.
Best wishes

Dear Cellar Forever Supporters
Firstly, thank you for your continuing patience! We have just sent out our latest Crowdfunder update. While time is beginning to slip away, for us it's all about continuing to remain positive and we hope you can too! 💓👊🤘

Without essential building work the Cellar will be forced to close this December after 38yrs of live music. Here's our chance to change this

What a post! Thank you Nightshift Magazine! 💪✊👊

I don't watch The BRITS - I'm not big fan of glitz, glamour, champagne and red carpets, preferring feedback, beer, sticky floors and maybe some errant strobe lighting - but looking at the list of last night's winners, it struck me how many of them came up through the ranks of Oxford's grassroots venues: Jorja Smith, The 1975, George Ezra, Tom Walker and Sam Fender. The last two played The Cellar within the last 18 months. The Cellar that remains under threat of closure for want of the sort of money that might fuel a single BRITS after-party.

Across the UK small venues are closing down on a weekly basis, because of building developments, noise complaints, unsympathetic landlords or simply the lack of cash to buy new sound or lighting equipment.

Where will the next generation of BRIT winners earn their spurs? The music industry needs to properly recognise the value, both culturally and financially, of grassroots venues and do its bit to keep them alive; the government urgently needs to pass legislation that protects venues, particularly from new developments and all the issues they bring. And of course, people need to keep supporting their local venues and up and coming acts. Just take a punt on a new act once in a while. Ten quid or so to see next year's global star up close and personal is better value and more fun than spending half your weekly wage for the privilege of watching a band from the back of some enormous soulless arena. Yes, the light show will be better, but you'll likely be watching it on a big screen from a quarter of a mile away.

I'm probably preaching to the converted on that last point, but I'm sure I'm not alone in knowing people who would barely countenance going to a small club or pub venue. So be like me and bore then to death with your tales of seeing Radiohead or Muse or Coldplay or Ed Sheeran or Adele when they were unknowns and encourage them to join you. Today's stars are yesterday's hopefuls. Keep supporting grassroots live music.
