Jeremy Clarkson's pub is fully booked every single day.
It is losing money anyway.

£8,486 down in its first four months. Fully booked every single day.

This is not a sympathy story. Nobody needs to feel sorry for a multi-millionaire with a television deal. What it is, is the single clearest piece of evidence the trade has had all year that the problem is not the landlord. It is the structure.
Look at what is actually eating the money.

400 pint glasses stolen every week. Cooking oil, lightbulbs, and urinal traps walking out the door. A generator costing £100 a day because the electricity supply cannot keep up — with a permanent grid upgrade quoted at £200,000. £47,000 a month on parking attendants alone.
That is one pub. Fully booked. Backed by a television budget and a national media platform most landlords could not dream of. Still losing money.

So here is the question worth sitting with.
If money, fame, and a camera crew cannot make this maths work, what exactly is anyone suggesting the average independent landlord is doing wrong? The problem was never effort. It was never even talent. It is the structure every single pub in this country is forced to trade inside of.

Here is the maths nobody puts on a graphic.
You are the one waking up early to take the delivery. You are the one still scrubbing the lines at midnight, counting the till, locking up alone. You take all the risk. Your name is on the lease.
And when the money finally comes in, you are last in the queue to get paid.

The taxman takes a slice before you have even opened the doors. The energy company charges whatever it likes to keep your cellar cold and your lights on. The brewery and the pubco keep nudging the price of a barrel up until the margin on a pint is barely worth ringing through the till. Theft, breakages, and a hundred costs nobody warns you about quietly eat what is left.
By the time everyone else has taken their cut, there is next to nothing left for the person who actually did the work.

It feels like running a charity for the taxman, the energy companies, and the pubcos — while you survive on whatever is left over.

That feeling is not paranoia. It is the maths. And it is exactly the same maths whether you are pulling pints in a sixteenth century coaching inn in the Cotswolds with a camera crew outside, or in a backstreet local with two staff and a casual on weekends.

What is the hidden cost driving you mad this month?
Beer duty. The electric bill. A supplier who keeps creeping the price up by pennies until it is pounds. The till roll of small charges that add up to a number you do not want to look at on a Sunday night.
Tell us below. Vent. You are not the only one doing the maths at midnight and not liking the answer.
