Did you know…….

The pub is named after Admiral George Brydges Rodney, later Lord Rodney.

Admiral George Brydges Rodney lived from 1718 to 1792 and became one of Britain's most celebrated naval commanders.

His greatest victory came at the:
Battle of the Saintes — 12 April 1782
Rodney's fleet defeated the French fleet in the Caribbean during the American War of Independence.

It was a hugely important British naval victory which made Rodney a national hero.

His connection with the Middleton family brought his name to Wollaton.

The Admiral Rodney was originally part of the Wollaton Hall estate.

The Willoughby family owned Wollaton for centuries, and the later Middleton family continued the estate ownership.

Records show the Rodney as having been a farmhouse on the Wollaton Hall estate.

That means the pub wasn't originally an isolated commercial building. It was part of the estate's village property.

This also explains why the history of the Rodney is so closely tied to the history of Wollaton Hall, its farms and its workers.

Did you know…….

The Rodney stands on the eastern side of the historic village square, beside St Leonard's Church and opposite the old village pump.
This is important because the present-day Wollaton that most people know developed largely after the 1920s. The village square is the older settlement.

The square is surrounded by 18th-century cottages, with the Admiral Rodney standing prominently at its eastern side.

The village itself has much deeper roots. There are Roman archaeological remains in the wider area, while St Leonard's Church has medieval origins.

The village therefore existed for centuries before Wollaton became a Nottingham suburb.
