As the UK prepares to experience temperatures roughly equivalent to the surface of the sun, please spare a thought for our team who will be sprinting about delivering your ice-cold pints and pub grub without spontaneously combusting. 🍺🔥

A gentle reminder that service may be slightly slower at times while staff take the occasional water break, cooling-off mission, or brief emotional recovery in front of the fridge.

Meanwhile, the kitchen is expected to reach temperatures approximately 15 degrees hotter than outside… which basically makes our chefs part-time firefighters at this point. 👨‍🍳🔥

So please:
💧 Stay hydrated
😎 Be patient
❤️ Be kind to the team
🍺 And remember… warm beer is a crime, so we’re working hard to prevent it.

So let me get this straight…
The government proudly announces a reduction in VAT on kids meals to 5% over the summer as if hospitality operators are suddenly going to be rolling in money and families are about to save a fortune.

Meanwhile, most community pubs like ours already spend the holidays practically giving kids meals away anyway.

At The Hayloft we regularly run:
🍔 Kids eat for £1
🍕 £5 meal deals
🥤 Family offers to try and make eating out affordable

So here’s the maths they don’t put in the press release…

A £1 kids meal currently includes 20% VAT.
That means the VAT element is about 17p.

Drop VAT to 5%?
The “saving” becomes roughly 12p.

Twelve pence.

Not £12.
Not some magical family-changing amount.
Twelve actual pennies.

Even on a £5 meal deal the difference is around 60p.

And before anyone screams “well every little helps”… yes, it does.
But let’s stop pretending this is some huge rescue package for hospitality or struggling families when operators are already absorbing massive costs just to get people through the doors.

Energy bills up.
Wages up.
Employer costs up.
Suppliers up.
Insurance up.
Business rates still ridiculous.

Yet somehow pubs are expected to smile politely because the Treasury has handed back the equivalent of half a Freddo.

The reality?
Most decent pubs already subsidise family dining because we know families are struggling. We do it because we’re community pubs, not because it’s profitable.

So forgive me if I don’t break out the bunting over a tax “saving” that wouldn’t even cover the sauce sachets.

Hospitality doesn’t need headlines.
It needs proper long-term support before more community venues disappear altogether.
