Founded in 1777, Bass Brewery made history with the very first registered trademark under the Trade Marks Registration Act 1875. The bold red triangle, a symbol that helped shape modern branding and became famous around the world.
It even found its way into fine art, appearing in ‘A Bar at the Folies-Bergère’ (1882) by Édouard Manet. In the painting, bottles of Bass pale ale, marked with their distinctive red triangle, sit on the bar. This highlights just how globally recognised the brand had become by the late 19th century, even in the heart of Parisian nightlife.
