🧊 COCKTAIL ORIGINS: The Tom Collins 🧊

The Tom Collins is a cocktail with a rather unusual claim to fame : it was the subject of one of the first-ever viral pranks!

In 1874, a bizarre "Great Tom Collins" hoax swept across America. People would tell their friends that a man named Tom Collins was in a nearby bar talking bad about them. The friend would then storm into the bar asking for "Tom Collins" : and the bartender would serve them this cocktail!

The drink itself : gin, lemon, sugar, and soda water : had been around since the 1820s, but the prank catapulted it to fame. It's a tall, refreshing drink perfect for a sunny day.

Now that's a story worth sharing! 🍋

Fancy a bit of history with your happy hour? 🌸🍸

Did you know the Clover Club wasn’t just a drink? It was a whole vibe long before we were around! It was born in the late 1800s at the Clover Club in Philadelphia : a prestigious men's club packed with the city's top writers and lawyers. 💼

Made with gin, lemon, raspberry syrup, and that signature silky egg white foam, it’s easily the prettiest pink cocktail in history. It’s fruity, sophisticated, and absolutely gorgeous to look at. Who knew the legal profession had such a refined palate for pink drinks? 😂

It’s a absolute favourite for weddings and summer parties because it looks just as good as it tastes. If you want this classic served up at your next event, hit us up and let’s get planning! 🥂

This week in Cocktail Origins, we’re heading to Mexico to explore the beloved Margarita! 🇲🇽 Legend has it that this iconic sour was created in late 1938 by Carlos 'Danny' Herrera at his restaurant Rancho La Gloria, situated between Tijuana and Rosarito. He concocted it for an aspiring actress allergic to many spirits, but who could drink tequila. By adding salt to the rim, lime juice, and Cointreau, a legend was born! Planning a festival-style celebration or garden party? A fresh, hand-shaken Margarita is always a crowd-pleaser. 🍸✨

🥃 COCKTAIL ORIGINS: The Whiskey Sour 🥃

Before citrus was everywhere in cocktails, the Whiskey Sour was the original punchy refreshment. 🍋

The sour is one of the oldest cocktail families : first appearing in Jerry Thomas's 1862 'The Bartender's Guide.' A simple formula: spirit, citrus, sugar. But it was the addition of egg white (the 'Boston Sour' style) that elevated it to something special.

Interestingly, the Whiskey Sour played a key role in the history of bar sanitation. In the 19th century, bartenders would use large blocks of ice carved from frozen lakes, and the citrus in sours helped mask any off-flavours from less-than-pristine water sources.

The Whiskey Sour also helped popularise the use of Angostura bitters as a garnish : a few drops on the foam became a signature flourish.

🥚 With or without egg white? That's the question!

Did you know the Sazerac is basically the granddaddy of all cocktails? 🥃✨

Back in the 1830s in New Orleans, an apothecary named Antoine Peychaud started mixing brandy with his family’s secret bitters. He served it up in a little eggcup called a ‘coquetier’: and legend has it, that’s where the word ‘cocktail’ actually came from! (Though historians do love a good debate on that one! 😅)

Named after his go-to brandy, Sazerac-de-Forge et Fils, the drink eventually swapped cognac for rye whiskey and added that iconic absinthe rinse we know and love. It’s a proper bit of history in a glass.

Whether you’re planning a wedding, a festival, or a private bash, we love bringing these legendary classics to life from our horsebox bar. There’s nothing like a drink with a good story to get the conversation flowing. 🥂

Ever wondered how the ultimate brunch staple came to be? 🍅

Welcome to Day 20 of our Cocktail Origins series! Today we’re looking at the legendary Bloody Mary.

This savoury classic traces its roots back to 1920s Paris at the iconic Harry’s New York Bar. Bartender Fernand Petiot is the man credited with first mixing vodka and tomato juice. When he later moved to New York, he added the salt, pepper, lemon, and Worcestershire sauce we know and love today to give it that signature kick! 🌶️

Whether you’re recovering from a big wedding bash or just kicking off a sunny Sunday, the Bloody Mary is a timeless choice. At The Cheeky Tipple, we love seeing how creative our guests get with the garnishes: though we reckon you can’t beat a classic celery stick and a splash of heat.

How do you like yours? Extra spicy or loaded with garnishes? Let us know in the comments! 👇
