📢 Community Consultation – The Future of the Gatehouse

We wanted to let our supporters know that the new owners of the Gatehouse are holding a community consultation about proposed changes to the site.

🗓 Tuesday 25th March
⏰ 1pm – 4pm
📍 Marlpit Community Centre

According to the leaflet circulated locally, proposals have been prepared to change the use of the pub and build an extension to the rear to provide a new community centre and place of worship.

If you care about the future of the Gatehouse site, this is an opportunity to attend, see the proposals, and ask questions.

📄 The consultation materials will also be available online via Brown & Co:
www.bac-consultation.co.uk

Community consultations are an important chance for local voices to be heard, so we wanted to make sure our supporters were aware.

📢 Gatehouse Update 🚪✨

We wanted to share some news with you all—our bid for the Gatehouse wasn’t accepted, as the owners have chosen a different buyer. While this isn’t the outcome we hoped for, we remain dedicated to preserving the Gatehouse’s heritage and are keen to collaborate with the new owners to ensure its legacy lives on.

Most importantly, our mission hasn’t changed! 💪 We are still committed to bringing Norwich its first community-owned pub—a space for everyone to connect, celebrate, and support one another. Our events will continue, and we’ll keep raising funds while we search for the perfect venue.

Thank you for your ongoing support. This is just the beginning, and we can’t wait to take you on this journey with us! 🍻❤️

Celebrating the remarkable success of community-run pubs in Norfolk and Suffolk! 🍻✨

In the face of challenges, local communities have come together to preserve their cherished pubs, transforming them into thriving hubs of connection and culture. Here are some inspiring examples:

The Locks Inn, Geldeston: Once closed and at risk of being lost, this iconic riverside pub was revitalized in 2020 by over 1,400 community shareholders who raised £600,000. Today, it stands as a testament to community spirit and determination.

The Fox Inn, Garboldisham: After falling into disrepair, this pub on the Norfolk-Suffolk border was brought back to life through a community-led effort. Celebrating six years since its reopening, The Fox Inn continues to be a vibrant gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

Pleasure Boat Inn, Hickling Broad: Closed for three years, this historic pub was restored by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, becoming the first wildlife trust-owned pub. It now serves as a gateway for visitors to explore the nearby nature reserve, blending conservation with community engagement.

These success stories highlight the power of community action in preserving local heritage and fostering social bonds. Let's raise a glass to the dedicated individuals who ensure these beloved establishments continue to thrive! 🥂

Did you know? The Gatehouse’s bar is listed—a rare honour! Over a decade ago, the BBC asked if this was one of the most beautiful pubs in Britain when it received its Grade II listing, protecting its historic bar and other unique features.

With its warm wooden fittings, this ‘improved’ 1930s pub was described as feeling like a small-scale Baronial Hall—and it’s right here in our city! Let’s protect this incredible heritage and bring the Gatehouse back to life.

Pledge now and help restore our community pub to its proper place! 🍻✨

In this video, we caught up with Dennis, a long-time local and a familiar face in the neighbourhood. He shares his dreams for what the Gatehouse Pub could become—a space filled with laughter, friendship, and a true sense of community. 🍻💬

Dennis envisions a pub that’s more than just a place for a pint—a hub where everyone feels welcome, where local stories are shared, and where connections are made. From running on Marriott’s Way to canoeing on the river, his ideas highlight how the Gatehouse could celebrate our local surroundings and bring people closer to nature. 🌿✨

🌿 Thank You for an Incredible Morning at Sweet Briar Marshes! 🌿

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for Fridays' fantastic walk around Sweet Briar Marshes, hosted by Mark, the Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s new Community Engagement Officer, with support from Matt! 🌾

Mark, who used to play music at the Gatehouse during its legendary folk nights, shared his wealth of knowledge about this incredible patchwork of habitats and eco tones. From coppiced alder trees to the hope of nightingales returning to the scrub, it was a morning filled with fascinating insights into the marsh’s natural wonders.

We spotted a ‘robin’s pincushion’ on dog roses, learned about the superfood properties of rose hips, and even found the hardy British White cattle grazing to help manage the land. The connection between the Gatehouse and these vibrant marshes couldn’t have been clearer.

A special thank you to Matt for his support on Friday and for hosting such an engaging webinar a couple of weeks back! Your insights continue to inspire and connect our community.

📅 Don’t forget to join us for the Christmas Sunday Social on December 15th! 🎄✨ Let’s come together for some festive fun, community spirit, and good cheer.

💚 Thank you to Mark, Matt, the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, and everyone who joined us for this memorable morning. We’re so lucky to have Sweet Briar Marshes on our doorstep – a true treasure for us all!
