🍺 ALE SPOTLIGHT: TIMOTHY TAYLOR’S LANDLORD
A proper classic — and there’s a reason you’ll regularly find Landlord sitting proudly on our bar.
First brewed in 1952 by Timothy Taylor’s in Keighley, Yorkshire, Landlord is a beautifully balanced 4.3% cask pale ale with a complex, hoppy character.
👃 On the nose: citrus, hops and a touch of fruit
🍺 On the palate: crisp and refreshing, with a gentle malty sweetness and plenty of depth
🌿 The finish: clean, hoppy and wonderfully moreish
But the story behind it is almost as good as the pint…
When the beer was launched, it was originally called Competition Ale, and local drinkers were invited to come up with a better name. A steward from the Keighley Drill Hall Club suggested “Landlord” — winning himself a rather impressive £500 prize in the process!
And it’s done rather well since… 🏆
Landlord has won many awards, including being crowned CAMRA’s Supreme Champion Beer of Britain FOUR times.
A few more pub-quiz-worthy facts…
🌾 It’s brewed using Golden Promise barley, prized for its rich, biscuity malt character.
💧 The brewery uses water from the Knowle Spring, beneath the brewery in Keighley.
🌿 Timothy Taylor’s still selects whole-leaf hops, rather than relying solely on processed hop pellets.
🧫 They even have their own unique yeast strain — known as “Taylor’s Taste” — which is so important that backup samples are kept securely in separate locations.
And perhaps our favourite bit of trivia…
Even Madonna is a fan. In 2003 she revealed on national television that she’d developed a taste for English real ale — particularly a pint of Landlord. 👑🍺
From Yorkshire to Norton-in-Hales, it’s fair to say this one has earned its place on the bar.
If you’ve never tried a Landlord, perhaps it’s time to see what all the fuss is about…Although we should warn you — one has been known to lead to another. 😉🍻
