150 Years of Rugby at RGS Newcastle 🏉

On Saturday (11th September), students kick-started a historic rugby season!

For a century and a half, rugby has helped shape generations of Old Novocastrians, fostered ambition, friendship, resilience and a deep sense of belonging.

The start of the 2026-27 Rugby season saw the 1st XV exercise their resilience, coming back from 0-7 down at half-time to beat Lancaster 12-7. Meanwhile, the U14A fought ferociously back from 5-19 down to beat Lancaster 24-19. There were also victories for the 2nd XV and U16s whilst the U15A finished with a draw. Mr Conlon, Head of Rugby, said: "Following a successful pre-season, our anniversary campaign kicked off on Saturday with an excellent set of results against Lancaster Royal Grammar School. The 1st XV took to the field in a special-edition strip inspired by the earliest known photograph of an RGS 1st XV, dating back to 1897."

Before kick-off, Senior School rugby players and their families came together for a special Rugby 150 shirt presentation, marking the first of many exciting events taking place as we celebrate this sporting milestone.💫

Joe M (Y13), 1st XV captain, said: "The 1st XV were honoured to be presented with our shirts by Old Novo and former Newcastle Falcons captain Will Welch, during a special event that highlighted the rich history of RGS Rugby and unveiled the exclusive 2026-27 anniversary kit.

"It gave the squad a real sense of pride and purpose, reminding us that we are playing for something bigger than ourselves. We were delighted to begin the season with a win against a strong Lancaster side, made even more special by the opportunity to do so at home in the new kit."

We look forward to sharing more about our upcoming Rugby 150 celebrations!

Student Review 🎭 RGS House Drama 2026

This year’s theme was theatre around the world, and we only had 80 days to prepare and three performances each to transport audiences around the globe.🌎✨

The first challenge was the monologues, each written in a different place in the world. Shout out to Libby T (Year 7) who stepped up at the last moment to help Stowell perform their monologue, and Aodhan D who truly commanded the stage performing the monologue alone; his Berkovian influence was clear!

The second challenge was the ensemble piece, using a fable from a different culture; performances transported audiences from New Zealand to Ancient China, Africa and Native America. In their performance of 'How the Coyote Steals Fire', Eldon used a red scarf to symbolise fire and effectively embodied the animals portrayed in the story.

The third and final challenge was 'Around the World in 80 Days'. Stowell chose to take audiences back in time, meanwhile Horsley performed a parody of ‘Race across the World’ – with Jude B dropping his camera one too many times.

It was very close, but Eldon’s three-year winning streak came to an end when Stowell claimed first place.🏆

Everyone performed brilliantly, and well done to the individual winners: Amelia M for Stowell, Sahara G for Eldon, Laura C for Horsley and Alessandro B for Collingwood.

"It was a joy to bring to life the wealth of historic connections between RGS and our beloved city through facts and stories." - Mrs Piffero, RGS Archivist ✨

Thank you to everyone who joined us last week for our annual RGS History Walk led by our school Archivist, Mrs Piffero.

From Newcastle Cathedral to Charlotte Square, Old Novocastrians and RGS parents explored former sites of RGS across Newcastle city centre, before viewing the school's original Elizabethan Great Charter of 1600 in Tyne & Wear Archives Service.

"It was a special treat to be able to view the Great Charter at the Tyne & Wear Archive; we are grateful to the team there for accommodating us. It is a fascinating document to see up close, parchment written in Latin and over 400 years old," Mrs Piffero added.

Thank you to David Goldwater (ON 51-62), who originally conceived the walking tour and was a guide for many years. As a champion of our school's heritage, it was great to invite him onto the walk as a guest.❤️

It's GNR 'Medal Monday'.🏅✨

Congratulations to everyone from across the RGS community, including staff, parents, students and Old Novocastrians, who became part of history yesterday by running in the 45th Great North Run. What an incredible achievement!👏❤️

GNR RGS highlights include:

✨Our Junior School students taking part in Saturday's mini GNR including Skylar C, Jennifer L and Fraser H (Y4).

✨Mr Bellew, Teacher of Physics, who ran with his North Shields running club and finished in record time, 70 minutes and 22 seconds!

✨Mr Qualye, Deputy Head (Academic), finished the race in 95 minutes and, despite the hot weather, was spurred on by the amazing atmosphere.

We are thrilled that our friends at North East Museums have recently acquired Collingwood's Union Flag from the Battle of Trafalgar!

Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood (1748-1810) was one of our most famous former pupils, attending RGS for a short time (c.1756 - 1761).

Fellow Old Novocastrians' will remember seeing his portrait on display in our Main Hall, and he may have been a member of Collingwood House! Still today, our CCF cadets take part in the annual commemoration of Trafalgar Day in Newcastle.

You can view the flag at the Discovery Museum - from Saturday 17th October until Sunday 1st November - before it is stored away whilst a new dedicated exhibition space is developed.

🔍This rare flag flew from the mast of HMS Royal Sovereign, flagship of Vice Admiral Collingwood during the Battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805.

It is thought to have been made by sailors on board, many of whom would have hailed from the North East.
