If planning a garden or an area of a garden for the first time it's always worth have a soil ph test done before you choose your plants. The test here was done for a potential wildflower meadow in Darras Hall.

Courtyard project from last year. This house is a listed building with its origins in the Tudor period. We removed an old tired lawn and designed and made this formal box Parterre. The box blight risk has deterred us from trimming the hedge this year. It seemed to be sweeping the county last year with the wet weather . Fingers crossed this year will be dryer.

We do commercial contracts too! Here is the result of clearing a patch of ground at a Garage in Newcastle. The reason that specialists were needed here was because of the Japanese Knot w**d problem.
This means that a management plan must be put in place and the removal of the plant needs to be documented and photographed. The site must be clear for five years before anything else can be done with the area.
We used stem injection to kill the Knotw**d at thia site as it is too close to the river for any spraying.
If removing Knotw**d from an area be sure to either burn the bits of the plant on site or take it to a licenced waste site. For advice give us a call using the button above.

Last year an Ash near Guyzance dropped a large branch onto a 200 year old stone wall. The branch had not fully detached which meant David had to climb up and cut it free.
Due to the shape of the break he could not cut it to the most sympathetic point for the tree, this is called the 'branch bark ridge' and is the point at which the tree can "heal" the wound over time.
So David made a decision based on his years of study into Arboriculture and left the branch with the natural break it had created, his only other option was to create an unnatural cut that would have been of no benefit other than to look neat. The woodpeckers will certainly be very happy.

Does anyone remember the courtyard that we were designing for a barn conversion near Alnwick? Well Its finished and here it is covered in snow. We went by to smash the ice on the fountain that contains some fish. There was 3 inches of ice on the top!!!!
The building work for this design was done by the very talented Applebys of Rothbury.
Remember that fish do not get fed when the water temperature is below 10 degrees. Putting food in when it is cold can kill the fish so don't be tempted, the fish go into a resting state and will be fine until the Spring. The most important thing is to make sure their oxygen levels are kept high, ideally with an oxygenating pond w**d but if not regularly agitate the water (I like to stick and spade in and spin it to splash as much as possible) to introduce the air into the water and smash the ice everyday. Don't forget, fish have feelings too!

We filled these troughs with Verbena bonariensis last year instead of the maintenance heavy bedding plants that had been in before.
We grew the Verbena from seed, which was incredibly easy as to do and replanted them into these troughs in the Spring. They have been so good that the customer preferred them to the Pelargoniums he had before. These Verbena; although perennial are best replaced every few years to keep them at their best and not cut back until the frosts have gone in Spring.

Sian and David are both experienced dry stone wallers. If you have some stone in your garden why not have a go yourself, you've got nothing to loose. Some of the less obvious benefits of a stone wall are that it make wonderful habitat for voles and shrews and you can get rid of your non compostable rubbish in the center of them. They are traditionally filled with all sorts of debris so you'll be carrying on the tradition!

Pond renovation work today in the cold morning air. This poor pond is unfortunately in the water table and with high rainfall the liner balloons up from all the water that gets underneath. We would usually make pipes or Irish drains to remove the excess water however in this case there is nowhere lower to direct the water (we recommend quite a significant to drop in the pipe level for it to work efficiently).
So Plan B. Instead of a pond we are creating a running water stream and filling the old pond in with gravel to create a sink hole. There's nothing like the sound of running water in the garden so this will definately be an enjoyable project. We'll make sure to show you the project when it's finished this Spring.

The Autumn Crocus 'Colchicum' is an unusual bulb if you want something more interesting for next year. They are expensive and you only tend to get a single bulb in a pack but they are amazingly showy and reliable if planted in the right spot.
They are actually members of the lily family and not a Crocus afterall.
Best grown in a sheltered spot with lots of afternoon sun. The bulbs are available to buy in late summer. After flowering let the flower and any leaves die back naturally to replenish the bulb underneath.
