The Green man motif has many variations, found in many cultures from many ages around the world and is usually related to natural pagan deities. He or it is most commonly noted as a protective, god like deity who's ultimate concern is ecological awareness. We simply borrowed his ancient influence to help express what we are all about.
At The Green Man we are a friendly pub that is dedicated to sustainability, environmental conservation and the support, solely of local products including all of our spirits, beers, ales and tasty ingredients. We have carefully sourced all of our products from Northumbria. The ancient kingdom of Northumbria stretches from the Humber to the Scottish border. This helps to enforce our sustainability and really push to be as environmental as we are able.
Our initial goal is to make charity fun and make it easy and simple for all those people who love the idea of giving and helping but never get the time in their busy lives to contribute the way they would like to. For every pint that we sell, 10p goes to a charity of your choice and each charity is assigned to a different draught product. We aim to ‘save the planet one pint at a time’. Look out for our locally sourced Pilsner named ‘The Green Man’ which is our house pour, which will always be funding a charity of the month. We’ll be regularly calling on our customers to help suggest environmental charities to support! See our list of current charities below:
(All of our charities have been background checked to ensure that they are non profit organisations that demonstrate real commitment to sound fiscal management, good governance, accountability and transparency. This ensures that your per pint donations go as far as we are able to make possible.)

We have set out to create a classic pub atmosphere whilst doing our best to join many others in making a positive impact in the world and on the industry in a time when we feel that the planet needs it most. On top of our 10p per pint charity organisation we have also made it our mission to make sure that we are as environmental as we can be in every area of our humble little space. Everything has been taken into consideration from our furniture to our toilet paper. To fight waste, we have given time and dedication to decorating our venue top to bottom with only reclaimed furniture and vintage items, so don’t be alarmed by our slightly mis-matched, Frankenstein like decor. It’s all in the name of recycling and it adds some great character to the venue.
To top it off we are aiming to be the most dog friendly pub in Newcastle. We are neighbours to both Dog & Scone and Mog On The Tyne so Pudding Chare is becoming quite the spot for animal lovers. We have our very own pub dog, we sell healthy locally sourced dog treats, dog beers and every dog visitor we have is added to our ‘Good Boys’ wall of fame.
If it’s music you’re interested in; we’re into all sorts! We play Rock’nRoll, Indie, Disco, Soul, Funk, Electro, Reggae & More. We also have a vinyl collection which is compiled from records reclaimed from markets, record fairs and the bedrooms of music lovers from all over the north east, we’ve collected them from all over the place and it will continue to grow with your help, support and recommendations - If you have a big enough tote bag, feel free to bring a record you would like played.
Drink Local
The UK has a target to be carbon neutral by 2050, which is relatively ambitious among developed nations.
However as Greta Thunberg has pointed out, this target does not include the transportation of planes and shipping which bring the products we have come to enjoy to our shores. Heathrow is now the UK’s busiest port, we can’t rely on politicians to do all of this for us, we all have to help in our own small way. With this in mind, nothing you find in The Green Man will have been flown or shipped in from anywhere other than down the road. This is also a great way to support local and independent producers.
This said, we have to be realistic about this, we are doing our very best but if you think we can do better, please feel free to get involved and make suggestions ❤️.
