Think Again A46 Winthorpe Residents' Group

Think Again A46 Winthorpe Residents' Group In December 2020, Highways England proposed two A46 bypass routes around Newark. We are asking Highways England to Think Again

These have devastating consequences for Winthorpe Village and the route will not solve Newark's traffic problems.

A46 Think Again Statement - July 24, 2024

Think Again neither support nor oppose the National Highways plans; our objective is to work collaboratively with all agencies to achieve the best outcomes for our community.

Our political neutral residents group was set up in 2020 with one agenda item, to safeguard Winthorpe village and associated parkland, and to offer the residents of the Village a voice, this goal remains the same in 2024.

The two options proposed for the A46 Bypass in December 2020 by National Highways were both negatively impactful on Winthorpe Village, with one of the options eliminating residential property and creating eight lanes of traffic adjacent to the village. Both options would have a dramatic visual impact on historic parkland, increase noise and pollution, and compromise wildlife habitats.

In early 2020, Think Again proposed an option that moved the bypass as far away from Winthorpe as possible, whilst maintaining engineering integrity. From a design standpoint The Think Again team are delighted that so much of our ideas and recommendations have been adopted by National Highways, however,
we continue to have concerns surrounding outstanding multiple reports from National Highways and are waiting for National Highways final reports to be submitted to enable Think Again to comment.

From 15 January 2024, a team of National Highways surveyors will be out in the fields around Winthorpe, concluding surveys for the A46 Newark Bypass scheme at this location.

The team will be digging and investigating six trenches over two weeks.

The survey team will be accessing the fields directly from the A1133, which means there won't be any impact within the village itself.

Please be aware that this specialist activity is being carried out by trained professionals. The team will be equipped to conduct these surveys safely and efficiently. For your own safety, National Highways kindly request that residents and the public refrain from accessing the survey sites.

Reminder: National Highways is in Winthorpe on Thursday between 4pm and 7pm in the Lord Nelson carpark. There has been significant movement on their design and from initial assessments, Option 3 has been adopted more fully. This is really good news. There is still lots to digest and consider but if you can, please take a look at the new plans. For those who cannot make it – the new designs will be on the National Highways website in a couple of weeks.
