Mevagissey fact of the day:

This one forms a very sad part of Mevagissey's history, but one we should never forget.

On the 10th July 1849, Mevagissey fell victim to the Cholera Epidemic. By late October 1849, it had claimed the lives of 126 people in Mevagissey. (Numbers vary slightly dependant on source)
Based on the population at the time this was around 6% of the village.

The dead were buried in a mass grave in the graveyard of St Peters Church.

The first person to die from cholera was 7year old Mary Jane Rundle.
