The Green Lampshade

The Green Lampshade Mary-Ellen McTague,Naomi Kashiwagi & Kate Mountain have cooked up an innovative food and music event inspired by electronic music pioneer Delia Derbyshire

The Green Lampshade: 4pm - 10pm. Doors open at 3:30pm. The Green Lampshade is an innovative music and food event inspired by BBC Radiophonic Workshop’s Delia Derbyshire. It is part of Manchester Food and Drink Festival 2015 and will take place in Manchester's gallery in the park, the Whitworth. The Whitworth was recently awarded the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year. Acclaimed Mancunian chef,

Mary-Ellen McTague will serve an inventive and playful menu in the new Grand Hall. Food, drink and performances all take inspiration from themes, machines and techniques used by this pioneering electronic music composer, creating an immersive and multi-sensory experience to celebrate the life and work of Delia Derbyshire. Delia Derbyshire famously realised the original Doctor Who theme in 1963 and has since inspired many stars of the British electronic music scene. The University of Manchester acquired the Delia Derbyshire archive in 2007. The event will be compered by Naomi Kashiwagi, Creative Producer of The Green Lampshade. The event will start with a screening of the award-winning music documentary, The Delian Mode by Kara Blake (Director and Editor), a creative documentary exploring the life and work of Delia Derbyshire. There will then be five food courses, five Delia Derbyshire pieces of music and five performances, each responding to a theme, machine or technique. Huw Bunford (SuperFurry Animals), Caro C, Geth Griffiths & Gary Farr (performing Ailís Ní Ríain's composition), Denis Jones and Naomi Kashiwagi will all be performing.
“Delia Derbyshire found that just as natural ingredients make up the finest food recipes, in the ’Sound Kitchen’ that was the BBC Radiophonic Workshop she could collect natural sounds and, by cutting and blending, fashion them into inspiring audio dishes. Her pasta strips were loops of tape, her larder was the recording studio; her utensils were razor blades, sticky editing tape, microphone, filters and tape recorders. Her ‘Starters’ were miniature Signature Tunes, her Main Courses were her Inventions for Radio. As ‘Sous Chef’ to her Master Chef, I was privileged to cook up the Dr Who Theme with her – which turned out to be the ‘House Speciality.” Dick Mills, BBC radiophonic Workshop, 2015
The Green Lampshade is supported by the Delia Derbyshire estate and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.
