Just a stone’s throw out of the Northern Quarter, heading out (marginally) into Ancoats you'll find the Blackjack Taphouse located at a building that has long been known as the Smithfield Market Tavern. The ol

d girl herself was packed full of heritage, history and character... it underwent some changes, some for good, some for bad over the past few years. We could just try to fake a classic pub environment, manufacture old characteristics or fabricate a history, but frankly people can spot a charlatan rip off from a mile away. So, we decided to make a new 'pub' - A Modern Day Proper Pub! So, the result is a newish looking space but with every ingredient that makes a pub what a pub should be and how we all remember them being; the kind of pub we all grew up in. We hope it evolves over time and gets it's own grace, warmth and charm, becomes something genuine, for good people and like the best pubs, is a community in itself, inside it's walls.

Mild Magic is here and for those 5 bewitching weeks we'll be pouring Six MPH Mild! 🖤

This collaboration brew sees team up with iconic Leith brewery .

A complex dark grain bill, led by heritage favourite Chevallier, is the heart of the beer. This is a rich and luxurious brew, with notes of dark chocolate, fruity roast coffee and sticky malt loaf.

This name comes from the Rainhill Trials, a competition run in 1829 to test out locomotive power on the Liverpool & Manchester Railway.

Persevere is the Leith town motto, and lends its name to The Perseverance, Leith's entry. While the train was damaged in transit, it still managed to make the trials. Although only reaching 6mph, this struck us as true perseverance!

It's Simon's last shift with us today!

We're super sad to see him go. After almost 10 years at the Tav he's moving on to pastures new (go and see him at in Prestwich.)

He's a top chap and we're going to miss him a lot (even his dad dancing!)

Gamesters rejoice, we've got a brand new monthly event for you! 🪿

Whether you're an avid board game fan, or a newcomer who wants to get stuck in for the first time, this is the night for you.

Join our friendly games master who will make even the most daunting set of rules easy to understand.
