Taking a late silage cut to top up winter stocks? Wet autumn conditions increase the likelihood of soil contamination, leading to spoilage in the clamp.

Lallemand’s Lientjie Colahan shares key steps for late cuts:
- Mow at 10cm height, avoiding the lowest contaminated part of the plant. Only ted the grass once if weather conditions allow, to reduce dragging soil and spoilage bacteria into the clamp.
- Layer as flat as possible & chop slightly longer, this will reduce the risk of clamp slippage and have benefits for the fermentation.
- Use a silage inoculant formulated for silage made in wet conditions to drive fast fermentation and inhibit the activity of soil-borne spoilage bacteria.

What a clamp!

Combined wholecrop on the bottom and a late third-cut grass layered on top. The wholecrop was treated with Magniva Platinum Wholecrop, driving a fast fermentation and keeping that bottom layer tight, cool, and stable at feed-out. Multi-crop clamps can be tricky to manage, but using the right additive adds an extra layer of protection where it counts, keeping energy and dry matter locked in.

Nitrogen dioxide is a danger during early silage fermentation. Formed as nitrates break down in the clamp, even brief exposure to this heavy gas can cause severe respiratory harm. Gas can occur in all silages, and maize this year might be especially prone to it due to the harvest conditions.

Always prioritise ventilation, look out for brown or yellow vapours around the pit edge, and restrict access to the clamp area for the first 7-10 days after filling.
