We welcome back the former prog meister that is Bill Bruford tomorrow night as part of The Pete Roth Trio alongside Pete Roth himself a master guitarist and Stefan Redtenbacher depping in on the current tour for Mike Pratt.

Although Bruford's history as Hall of Fame inducted drummer in not one but two all-time great prog bands (Yes and King Crimson - not to mention a temporary stint with Genesis) captures many of the headlines, this band is very much a jazz project in the truest sense of the word. Exploring other genres like funk and rock but using the jazz superpower of improvisation to ensure that no two nights are ever the same, this is a band of all the talents.

They are playing much bigger venues than The Bear Club these days (not quite prog level stadiums yet though!) so this is an ideal chance to catch them in the intimate space of The Bear. Pete Roth told us this week:

"We’re very excited to return to The Bear Club.

We had a fantastic experience there last time, an incredibly attentive and responsive audience, and a venue that allows for real closeness and communication.

These kinds of intimate spaces are becoming rarer for us as the project grows, so nights like this remain very special.

The music hasn’t become any quieter, quite the opposite, so audiences should expect a very direct, high-energy, and immersive experience.

It’s not a passive concert; it’s a shared space of exploration in real time. We can’t wait to be back."

Fiery saxophone player David Kayode plays at The Bear Club on Saturday 25 July. One of the absolute rising stars of the London jazz scene, he brings the full-on vibrancy of his West African and North London heritage to bear in his music - a heady mix of afrobeat, reggae, Caribbean carnival, and the sound of the London streets.

Showcasing his brand new EP ‘Ade Kayode’ across festivals this spring and summer, we are delighted to welcome David to The Bear Club for what will be the first in our Generation Jazz 2.0 series of gigs across the summer and autumn.

It also comprises part of Tomorrow's Warriors’ ‘Warriors Rise’ initiative, which sees the acclaimed jazz talent development organisation support three emerging Warriors’ artists in building a UK tour, securing gigs, and providing tour planning and marketing mentoring.

Billy Marrows is one of the finest guitarists and composers on the London jazz scene today.

The quartet’s vibrantly melodic and expressive music explores the meeting point between composition and improvisation, creating a fertile playground for these highly inventive musicians. Drawing on grooves from across the globe, they take inspiration from a wide range of styles, including contemporary jazz, funk, and progressive jazz.

Their debut album ‘Dancing on Bentwood Chairs’ was released in February 2026, and this show is part of their album release tour.

Savannah Gardner & The Recovering Good Girls are back following their sold-out show last year.

This London-based band bends the country music genre to their mighty will, combining blues, h***y tonk, and gypsy jazz into their big sound while staying rooted in traditional and vintage country.

Support is from up-and-coming acoustic folk-roots duo Elizabeth & Jameson.

The word “jazz” implies musicians who listen and interact; people who never play it the same way twice. The Pete Roth Trio has those qualities in abundance, but the group’s music is also something over, around, above, and below jazz. What they play isn’t always going to fit, or be “nice,” but it will be great.

They will be joined by a very special guest, Bill Bruford, on drums. Internationally known as a rock musician with prog supergroups Yes and King Crimson, Bill also has impeccable jazz credentials.

Appearing at The Bear Club on 10 July, Dan Costa plays beautiful lyrical jazz piano which has sometimes been compared to Bill Evans or Chick Corea in feel and his latest album Beams is an absolute joy which brings out Costa's Latin heritage.

For his upcoming UK dates, Costa will be joined by two British musicians who are well known to The Bear Club audience: Rod Oughton (drums), a prolific bandleader and composer whose projects include Tomorrow’s New Quartet (who have played The Bear Club twice in recent years).

On bass, Pete Komor, a dynamic and versatile double bassist known for his strong groove, lyrical playing, and work across the UK jazz scene with his group ‘Howl Quartet’ (who played The Bear Club in 2023) as well as extensive side-man appearances with artists such as Javier Zalba (Buena Vista Social Club).

Perfect jazz for a summer’s evening.

The Pete Roth Trio, featuring stellar drum maestro Bill Bruford, join us on Thursday 4 June, having sold out last year’s debut show, which was one of the highlights of the year.

Bill Bruford famously featured in not one but two of the most important prog-rock bands ever in Yes and King Crimson, going on to form his own outfit, Earthworks, to explore his love for jazz. Having retired from professional playing in 2009, Bill started playing the odd gig with his former student, Pete Roth’s established jazz trio in 2022. They enjoyed the experience so much that they started playing more, and last year they played an extended tour.

We caught up with Pete ahead of their return, and asked how the last year has been for the band - going from those tentative steps to taking tours of Europe, Japan, and Canada.
