Ticket sales for the gig with the Hugh Pascall Quartet, scheduled for this coming Monday 12th May 2025, at Louth Social Club Queen St, Louth LN11 9AU, have been disappointing and for this reason it has been agreed by mutual consent to cancel the event.

First of all, thank you for your support and we apologise for any disappointment. Hugh Pascall is a very talented musician and is held in high esteem. The other members of the quartet are also widely respected. They would have given us a good evening of live jazz.

Please return the tickets to the outlet you bought them from and get your Full Refund.

If you purchased by bank transfer, please use our email address ([email protected]) to send your details and you will be refunded as quickly as possible. It would be greatly appreciated if the refund process can be completed as quickly as possible.

Once again, please accept Freewheeling Jazz' apologies for this disappointing turn of events.

THANK YOU!

A huge thank you to all who came along to our first evening at Louth Social Club on Monday 14th April to see Ben Powling Quartet plays Coltrane. Email messages have come our way waxing lyrical about the music - equally I am fully aware that many would have found that particular performance to be challenging.

Ben Powling got in touch to ask us to thank the audience here (i.e. you), to tell us how much the musicians enjoyed playing in Louth and that it helped them immensely in their preparations to play at the prestigious jazz venue Peggy's Skylight two days later - an evening which also went well for them.

An exciting new venue for contemporary jazz is opening next month in Louth and our hope is that you will support our venture to sustain quality live music in Louth.

On Monday 14th April Freewheeling Jazz will relocate to Louth Social Club to host the BEN POWLING QUARTET which will play a programme of music by John Coltrane, the early years 1958-1965

BEN POWLING is certainly making an impact, having made an indelible mark on the Leeds jazz scene since his move to the city. Ben has been involved with exciting groups such as Vipertime, Mansion of Snakes and Wandering Monster - every one of these being innovative and creative and very well received.

Ben champions the artistic output of the city and with good reason too, releasing a compilation album "To Be Here Now" to celebrate the incredible diversity of music-making emerging in the area.
Outside of Leeds, Ben has been performing extensively as a sideman and leader across the UK, Europe and Asia, including many festival appearances. His music has been featured on BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 3 and Worldwide FM.

You are all fully aware that Coltrane was an exceptional musician - a true legend and icon in the field of jazz. "Legend" and "icon" are grossly overused words these days, but not in the case of John Coltrane.

The Coltrane influence is readily discernible in Ben Powling's playing. The Jazz Man Magazine described him as "forceful Coltrane-inspired tenor". "Powling mies a rich vein of Coltrane-isms" reported London Jazz News.

For his date in Louth, Ben and the quartet will play tribute to the great John Coltrane, focusing on his seminal albums "Crescent", "Coltrane Jazz", "Ballads", "Transition" and more.

The band will concentrate on the years 1958-1965, regarded by many as the period of Coltrane's finest work. To repeat my earlier words, those of you who are not keen on Coltrane's more avante-garde output need to have no fears at all.

This will be a very special evening in many ways - a great act and a new venue - and we hope you will be there - please see our events listing for ticket details

Monday 17th March 2025 will mark our final evening of live jazz at Masons Arms Hotel Louth and we intend on leaving on high note with jazz vocalist Fleur Stevenson, along with a trio of well-known faces…….

Fleur Stevenson is a jazz vocalist whose captivating voice and engaging performances have earned her a place among the most exciting voices in the jazz scene today. With a background in classical music and a deep love for jazz, Fleur has performed at prestigious venues such as Ronnie Scott’s and The 606 Club
Her ability to connect with audiences through her emotive interpretations and charming stage presence makes every performance a memorable experience. Fleur’s dedication to her art is evident in her nuanced delivery and the heartfelt emotion she brings to each song.

Joining her is the talented Maff Potts, a pianist with a rich and diverse musical journey. Maff’s experience spans from classical training to innovative jazz improvisation, allowing him to create a dynamic sound. Maff’s passion for music is reflected in his ability to craft intricate harmonies and rhythms, and also in his flamboyant, inventive stage presentation - all of which makes each performance a unique exploration of jazz.
Joining Fleur and Maff will be two Freewheelingjazz veterans - Maff’s brother Si Potts on drums and Mat Short on bass.
This will be our last ever Jazz at the Masons and we are keen that it will be a happy, enjoyable and memorable occasion.

Our first 2025 gig will be with THE JAMES BORLAND QUARTET at the Masons Arms Hotel on Monday 20th January. Doors are at 7.00pm and the performance will begin at 7.30pm.
James Borland is one of the most in-demand young musicians of the vibrant Birmingham jazz scene, described by critic Ian Mann as “a wonderfully fluent soloist.”-

His distinctive warm tone and characterful improvising speak both to his love of the jazz tradition, but also the forward-thinking melodicism of contemporary New York figureheads such as Ambrose Akinmusire and Immanuel Wilkins. Hence the suite of compositions “Looking Back, Moving Forward”

The JAMES BORLAND QUARTET brings together an impressive young rhythm section which shares his love of free-flowing, exciting jazz music, featuring sought-after bass and drum team Ben Love and Kai Chareunsy, and BBC Young Jazz Musician finalist Nick Manz on piano.

The Quartet has been playing regularly over the past year developing a strong musical connection and a deep understanding of James’s compositions. They are often joined by tenor saxophonist George Crowley, one of the stars of the London jazz scene.

The group will premier an exciting suite of new compositions, ‘Looking Back, Moving Forward’, written especially by James during his time working with George as part of the Jazz Central Mentoring Scheme.

The visit to Louth is therefore an opportunity for us all to catch a young talent in his ascendancy. Tickets are £15 advance and entry is £17 on the door.

The new season of live jazz is drawing nearer and we will begin with a dynamic young line-up which is fresh on the scene and already turning heads in their home area of West Yorkshire. There's an abundance of jazz talent in that area and no shortage of competition so to gain attention so quickly is some achievement.
Since graduating from the Leeds Conservatoire (2021-2024), JACK PEARCE is rapidly building a reputation as a dynamic and exciting jazz saxophone player.
Drawing heavily on the influence of hard and post-bop players, Jack effortlessly blends genres to create a unique style that escapes the confines of conventional jazz. He has performed at venues of all shapes and sizes and has toured extensively with the notoriously exciting Hardwick Circus to gain experience beyond his years.
The Jack Pearce Quintet represents his latest venture in music, showcasing his original compositions that pay homage to jazz traditions while injecting a fresh, inventive spirit. A band of Leeds Conservatoire alumni, the Jack Pearce Quintet focuses on a fusion of melodic and technical excellence. Drawing influence from post-bop and 90s world fusion, the original compositions have a uniquely open and interactive approach.
The Quintet is
Saxophone - Jack Pearce
Piano - Jascha Bingham
Guitar - Sam Hughes
Bass - Dan Sanderson
Drums - Angus Haygarth
The strength of the band is particularly apparent in a live setting - countless hours have been dedicated to every facet of the music and then refined on the stage, culminating in an exciting musical experience. Strong rhythms underpin vibrant, playful melodies creating a fusion complimentary to both traditional and modern jazz.
The Jack Pearce Quintet certainly brings fresh life into the familiar with their mix of original compositions and reinvented jazz standards.
They will play at The Masons Arms Hotel in Louth on Monday 23rd September. Doors are at 7.15pm.
Tickets for this first of season event are a special price of just £13 advance (£15 on the door) and they are available from our usual outlets

We're fortunate to have Pat McCarthy back playing live jazz at the Masons Arms in Louth on Monday 15th April, this time as part of THE BEN MARTIN / PAT McCARTHY QUARTET.
Pat McCarthy and Ben Martin have been playing together for over 30 years - in Pat’s quartet, The Jamil Sheriff Octet, John Warren’s Octet, in duos and trios, in running jazz workshops and also touring the UK.
They share an abundance of chemistry and a wry sense of humour alongside virtuosic musicianship...all of which ensures audiences leave their shows on a high. Between them they’ve played with Jim Mullen, Dick Pearce, Kenny Wheeler, Andy Sheppard, Alan Barnes, Bobby Wellins and many more jazz luminaries. When they come along to the Masons Arms their set will be drawing on material from the Golden Era of The Great American Songbook. The quartet will explore tunes from the 1920s to the 1950s which will include a healthy dose of swing, Be-Bop and the blues.

Helping them along will be the crack rhythm team of Martyn Spencer on double bass and Andrew ‘Woody’ Wood on drums. This pairing is the foundation of Ben’s regular band and, in the tradition of great jazz rhythm sections, they have an almost telepathic connection. Martyn has been a professional Jazz Double Bassist for 18 years having studied at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Performing regularly up and down the country as a freelancer, he has also worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company, BBC and ITV. Andrew is the house drummer for Peggy's Skylight Jazz Club in Nottingham, performing alongside some of the UK and Europe's best jazz musicians. His current performance projects include Tony Kofi's TENOR LEGACY and INSIDE STRAIGHT bands.

So..... Have no doubts at all about the pedigree of this line-up ..we are in for yet another special night of live jazz at the Masons.

"Pure class"... "Sublime".... "Bliss.. Absolute Bliss"...... are just three of the comments we've received from members of the audience who came along to see RACHAEL CALLADINE with Pat McCarthy, Andy Tytherleigh and Si Potts last Monday 18th March. Recently returning to the UK after a 10 year musical adventure in Dubai, Rachael Calladine is re-establishing herself as a well known face on the UK jazz and soul scene.
Rachael played many times with her own band at all the famous London venues required to establish her as one of the UK’s top jazz and soul vocalists, including 35 shows at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, most recently JUNE 2022 and numerous appearances at Pizza on the Park, the London Jazz Festival, the 606 Club, 100 Club and the Jazz Cafe to name but a few.

Appearances also include NYJO as vocalist and vocal coach (where she tutored the late Amy Winehouse), duo gigs with Ian Shaw, appearances with the late John Dankworth, Alan Barnes, Jim Mullen and many other British Jazz legends.

As a songwriter, Rachael has also had a healthy presence on iTunes for some time, with a catalogue of internationally released material, three solo albums and high profile compilations such as Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Volume 2, Hed Kandi, Roger Sanchez and Cafe Del Mar.

She currently works with a number of labels around the globe (Tony Records, NYC, Liquid Deep UK) and has recently celebrated three number-1 releases in the last 12 months on the Tracksource Soulful House Chart amongst others..

Now back on UK soil after 10 years singing at the highest level in Dubai (Burj Al Arab, Dubai International Jazz Fest, Emirates Palace, Armani Hotel etc) Rachael is re-establishing herself in the UK and Europe with recent sell-out gigs at London’s Ronnie Scott’s and The 606 Club amongst others. Rachael is currently signed to Major Underground/Sony Music Italy.
The line up for the show in Louth will be:
