"We must get closer to the essence of life
But be aware that it takes courage and strife
Expand your mind don't let it wither and die...
You will find it lifts your spirit high to the sky."

This time Sheldon Agwu is sharing his ‚on repeat’ list of tracks.

Sheldon was one of the musicians, standing outside Troy Bar or Charlie Wrights, who’s passionate complaints about a lack of J-Dilla in London’s live music scene triggered thoughts of making our own jam in the warehouse on Cable Street.

His passion for guitar has been inherited from his Father who raised him in a tradition of African Gospel music, along with being influenced by a diverse selection of genres. His artistic voice was however truly developed during college when he discovered J-Dilla and his work. He’s a musician, guitarist and a composer of reserved personality that describes his taste as lyrical and understated.

It is with great sadness that we have recently learnt of the passing of our friend TY Chijioke. We are so blessed, not just to have known him as a person, but also as an incredibly gifted MC and musician. He combined his skill with an honesty and humanity which made anyone at Salt Peanuts feel like they could get up and express themselves in the same way he could. You never knew what you were going to get on any one night, but you could always guarantee that he would take it to another level and bring us all with him. It goes without saying that it won't be the same without him there.

TY, you will be sorely missed. Rest in peace.

"Some Kind of Rhythm" is retrospective video of "Unit31: Unfolded" exhibition that took place at Unit31 in December 2019.

From Karol:
"In that editing play I wanted to visually represent the principal music element that furthermore reveals itself as basic human feature. The idea popped in my head when watching the footage I realized people's movement in their feeling of rhythm. Everyone reacts to the music in the own manner. All of that produce movement.

Unit31 is really the place, like my friend Mitchell said, where you just need to have "some" kind of rhythm. It's easy to spot some dancer expressing himself in movement or musician initiating it by playing on instrument, however often rhythm is secret, personal and introvert and you can find it in personal rituals like subtle head nods, finger clicks or feet taps. But it's still there and when you see the wider perspective everyone shares one feeling at the same time not fully knowing about it and that's beautiful.

As much is nothing new it reminds me that we are constructed in the same way and to enjoy music it means to feel the universal language that we all know, share and express with each other and that's what Unit31 was always for me.

I hope you’ll enjoy!"

We were thinking how to keep us all musically inspired during this hard time of self-isolation… and here we go!

“Unit31 Select” is a sonic journey into our community’s favourites, selection of inspiring tunes curated by various people of very extended musical tastes. We will post it every single Thursday until we run out of people who have some tunes to share, which is probably never.

For a kick off: Jamurai, one of our first DJs, who’s performance dates back to very early sessions (2014) when you had to be very agile to squeeze through shallow corridor that we called the scene. Like ninja, you had to smoothly pass between all musicians with their instruments and not disturb the flow- to finally put your laptop on the old, not-working hammond-type organs to get your music play.

After all, It wasn’t an easy task to blend your playlist with live, improvised music so his experience quickly became living proof of smooth mixing skills and the taste that moves between your body and soul.

As some of you may know, our uncle and long time host at Unit31 Salt Peanuts TY is currently in hospital in an induced coma. With the current covid-19 situation visitation is impossible so DJ Croc is putting together a mixtape with some music and also recorded messages from friends, family and fans to lift his spirits when he comes around. TY was always a master of making us feel comfortable at Unit31, we hope we can do our best to return the favour to him in this difficult time.

If you have a message for TY please record it and PM us or send an email to [email protected] and we will pass it on. You can also contact DJ Crock directly if you prefer.

Thanks everyone, stay safe 💜

"I think, to be honest, my favorite moment was my birthday. What can I say? The fact that we had an exhibition, two days exhibition. So many things could have gone wrong, but at the end everything came together…

It was such a vibe, man. I don't think you guys realize how much I'm buzzing from that day. Fred on the keys, on the synth base Lorenz on the keys, Ayo and Sam the drums, stopping them over that big Afrobeat jam we had at the end. That was sick. But the best is the fact that it's like seeing all of these people who are from different places, finding ways to connect and noticing, "Oh, you know, so-and-so, and he knows her...". feeling like you're in the middle of these personal connections, its not even on a superficial thing. Like it's just casual, you know? Everyone is kind of trying to look out for each other or at least everyone's trying to make something cool. Everyone's trying to make a good moment with each other.

You know, you get ups and downs and being an artist in London is quite, it's quite difficult."

The exhibition opens for daytime viewing from tomorrow til Sunday, everyday from 12-6. In the evenings this week we have jams lead by some of London’s best players as well as an edition of Portrait Jazz on Thursday.

We are also very excited to announce the guest of our secret show, the amazing producer, composer and drummer, Richard Spaven! He will performing at Unit31 with his trio on Friday 13th, accompanied by a DJ set from the beat wizard himself, Jake Milliner.

Thank you all for your love and support so far, we really couldn’t do this without you. Here’s to another amazing week of music!
