Cortex just knows how to deliver a proper night.

Intimate crowd, dim lit and full of raw selections, Saturday saw the crew take over again the Gallery for one last end-of-summer session. Loxy and DJ Flight brought the history, while Nectax and Cheza Lucina pushed things into newer and stranger territories. Jungle, drum & bass, footwork and everything bleeding between… as it should.

Big love to Cortex team always and everyone who came through. A very good way to see their summer out and something tell us it won’t be long till we see them again.

Some artist try and trace their history online and it feels a bit like piecing together a dance from whatever survived the morning after. Deep dives to find OG flyers, a scatter of interviews, Discogs page carousels of tiny photos and a silly amount of productions. Loxy aka Andrew Campbell was one of these artist. The kind that lived in the studio. A producer’s producer.

Before all this though was a B-Boy at heart learning what a rave really was. Hip hop, electro, reggae, acid house, hardcore and London pirate radio all feeding into a teenager before drum & bass had properly decided what it wanted to be but it didn’t take long for that to change and for records to roll in.

Roll Call. Architex versus Loxy on Submerged. Usual Suspects & Loxy with Stalker. Loxy & Dylan on Nightmare. Titles that didn’t exactly suggest a move into Balearic chillout was around the corner. The link with Ink became one of the big ones. Quasimodo, Twisted 3rd Mind… Straight Up Menace. Proper turn-of-the-millennium movements where it was all getting meaner, drums getting sharper, and basslines less interested in feeling euphoric.

That partnership ran straight through the world of Renegade Hardware, where Loxy became part of a generation pushing drum & bass into colder, stranger territory. Dark rooms, silver bombers, acetate, rewinds and stacks of dub plates. This passion for going forward continued, later link-ups with Resound like Vertigo, stretched that same darkness into something deeper, dubby and more spacious.

And then there was Cylon Recordings. Loxy’s own little black hole for bare bone drums, rude low-end and producers who preferred exploring the noisy edges rather than polishing the centre and decades later, be it his records or the labels they still tell the story better than any of these words can.

This Saturday, Loxy joins DJ Flight, Nectax and Cheza Lucina as Cortex takes over The Gallery at The Cause.

This year more is more.

It’s a whole spread of noise. A playground for the weird and wonderful.

Modeselektor are at the helm with Adiel, Deetron & Zenker Brothers not far behind. Gabber Eleganza stomping and head-turning with 10 Years of The Hakke Show. H-Foundation, ketia and Kylie Wears Berghaus pop their Dock Road cherry all while Frank Haag treats us to a London exclusive LIVE show alongside 30+ artist and performers yet to be revealed…

Introducing… Public Assembly.
A common heresy for curious minds.

Maybe you’ve heard it all before. We’ll try not to bore you, there’s no need to pretend we’re reinventing music. Just need you to read, so you can enjoy a couple things.Loud things. Strange things. Beautiful noise. A couple guitars and maybe a drum machine too. Music that sits firmly outside the box in a new multi-stage, day-n-nighter in the middle of winter. Live bands, DJs and whatever else crawls on stage.A little warmth when the capital turns cold. A place for outsiders, inside, together. A Public Assembly.

It’s 1993, you’ve just crawled back home from an under-18s knees up, you’re fiddling with the aerial to tune into any pirate radio you can before deciding to stick on the AWOL tape on you’ve already looped 100s of times… In this world was a teenage DJ Flight. A raver at heart, addicted to the music and longing for the education that followed.

As early as 17 they were in the clubs and one night lead them to Innovation at SW1. There she saw Kemistry & Storm behind the decks and suddenly the booth didn’t feel like somewhere reserved for someone else. Flight became a regular at their sets, handed over mixtapes and was eventually encouraged into the same scene she’d been obsessing over.

The graft came through Flex FM. Graveyard shifts, pirate transmitters, record bags and the hope someone was listening. Perfect training, basically. By 1999 she was a Metalheadz resident, before becoming a fixture at Fabio’s Swerve from 2000, sitting between deeper, soulful D&B and the darker sounds coming from Headz.

The pirate then went national. In 2002 she joined the newly launched BBC Radio 1Xtra, eventually hosting The Next Chapter and becoming the first woman to present a national drum & bass show in the UK. Not bad for someone who once thought she wasn’t ready for the Flex graveyard slot.

Production then came on her own terms, including work with Breakage as Alias, before launching Play:musik in 2005 to champion artists who weren’t getting enough light. One of its earliest releases came from a then-emerging Martyn. Fairly tidy bit of A&R you could say.

That instinct to open doors never left. Through EQ50, radio, mentoring and decades of championing new music, Flight went from the teenager watching Kemistry & Storm to becoming that figure for another generation herself.

Still digging, still connecting the dots, still moving the culture forward.

On the 5th September she joins Cortex at The Cause, bringing three decades of jungle and D&B history into the room with her.

Our container-filled concrete home has now hosted all sorts of sounds, styles or ages and so it should.

Any genre or scene should feel welcomed and there are definitely certain sounds that feel so right here. Saturday’s Signal was another reminder of how jungle and drum & bass are beginning to really find a home here. Even since our N15 days generations of selectors, producers and dancers have filled every corner of our dancefloors with rhythms that have been rattling London way beyond our years.

From the legends of GOLDIE M.B.E to Photek, the homage of the late DJ Randall and all those who helped build the blueprint to those pushing it somewhere new, we’ve been lucky enough to host some pretty ridiculous moments this year. This years instalment of Signal joins the ever growing list of nights that have brought the very best of jungle and DnB through our doors, and long may that continue.

And the next dance for the sound isn’t far away either. Our good friends Cortex return on 5th September, bringing Loxy Cylon, Flight and plenty more to the Gallery.

Back into the sweat box pressure cooker we go…

Just under a month to go and things are getting very real…

The Summer has begun to fade, ESG are set to bow out and 80% of tickets are already gone for the final big dance of the summer.

Now joining ESG for their FINAL EVER LONDON SHOW alongside Horse Meat Disco, Gilles Peterson and Joe Claussell are Aletha, D.N.S., Giles Smith, Jason Wynters, Lemon Lounge & Friends, Lily LDN, Macca, Reece Spooner, Rosy Ross, Thristian, Zakia and plenty more across the site yet to be announced.

This will be the last full-venue blowout, inside and out, before the cover lands and the night takes over.

Some of you reading this were probably jungle-obsessed kids rewinding Ni-Ten-Ichi-Ryu at the height of the 90s, trying to work out how the hell his drums moved like that. Maybe Solaris found you in the early millennium when Deep house and tech were in, wraparound shades and LimeWire was killing the family computer all while your jungle-purist mate insisted he’d “lost it”. Or maybe you were digging through Discogs at 2am last night discovering Modus Operandi nearly 30 years on and realising Photek influenced half the genres you’re currently into.

Depending on when you found Rupert Parkes, you probably know a completely different Photek. Before all that was a young raver soaking up pirate radio, hip-hop, jazz and drips from the ceilings of Telepathy and Labyrinth. Then came enough aliases to warrant several passports. Studio Pressure, Aquarius, The Sentinel, The Truper became lab projects as hardcore phased into jungle.

By 1994 those experiments had become Photek. Seven Samurai, U.F.O., Rings Around Saturn and Ni-Ten-Ichi-Ryu followed, records where silence suddenly carried as much weight as the drums. Goldie clocked it early, bringing him into Metalheadz, with the Blue Note sessions becoming a playground for this increasingly strange science.

Then came Modus Operandi in 1997. Jungle dismantled and reconstructed to a level rarely heard before. Jazz, dub, ambience, field recordings and breakbeats mixed with concerning attention to detail. Drum patterns could take weeks. Metal, glass and even a bicycle chain became instruments. True studio-hermit behaviour that helped rewrite the genres and decades that followed.

Once he’d helped redefine DnB, naturally Photek swerved. Solaris moved into house and techno, remixes for Björk and Bowie followed, film scores, KU and a DJ-Kicks mix containing no drum & bass at all. Three decades later, his fingerprints are everywhere. Maybe Photek is still trying to “perfect” his sound. If anyone can find out how much possibility exists between two drums, it’s probably him.

This Saturday he joins Signal’s DnB all-star gathering, as old and new gen selectors take over the whole site at The Cause.

TraTraTrax isn’t defined by one sound. It’s defined by a way of thinking.

Born in Colombia and founded by Nyksan, Verraco and DJ Lomalinda, the label has grown into one of the most exciting forces in contemporary club music. Drawing from techno, bass, IDM, dembow, guaracha and Caribbean rhythms, TraTraTrax has spent the last few years building a distinctly Latin American perspective on electronic music, championing artists from across the Global South while refusing to be boxed into any one genre.

What started as a DIY idea between friends has evolved into a worldwide movement, with landmark showcases everywhere from Dekmantel to Berghain, all while staying true to the communities and cultures that shaped it.

Tonight, that energy lands at The Cause.

Verraco, Nick León, Tasha, Beatrice M., Colombian Drone Mafia and Shackleton LIVE take over the Warehouse for one night only.
