Throughout our planet’s vast forests, over the course of eons, fungi like Phanerochaete chrysosporium have continually worked to break down dead wood and recycle nutrients back into ecosystems. The fungus does this by targeting lignin, one of the toughest polymers found in wood, and dismantling its complex carbon structures 🍄

Now, inspired by this natural phenomenon, scientists have created a catalyst that mimics the process to break down plastic... using only sunlight! ☀️

Located in the high desert of northern Chile, ALMA Observatory is one of humanity’s largest and most complex astronomical observatories.

Made up of a series of interlinked antennas stretching across a desolate, ultra-arid plain 5000m above sea level, it was assembled using giant crawlers with supplemental oxygen for the drivers.

With insane camouflage designed to blend in amidst lush green leaves, the Shield Mantis (genus Choeradodis) is just one of thousands of incredible species found in Yasuni National Park in Ecuador – one of the most biodiverse places on Earth thanks in part to the fact it never froze over during the last ice age. The heavily rainforested area is home to a vast array of wildlife, as well as several isolated human tribes including the Tagaeri and Taromenane peoples.

Today, there is both hope and frustration in Yasuni. In 2023, a national referendum resulted in 59% of Ecuadorians voting to stop oil extraction in the park – an amazing vote in favour of nature over profit. Implementation of the decision, however, has been slow, with El País reporting just this month that only 59 of 247 wells have actually been abandoned, while Block 43 continues producing roughly 40,000 barrels a day.

A beautiful example of common orange lichen aka Xanthoria parietina, also known as maritime sunburst lichen or shore lichen. This species thrives in sunny hardwood forests and on exposed sea cliffs, where bird droppings provide a rich source of nitrogen. Incredibly tolerant of air pollution and heavy metal contamination, it can be used as a bioindicator to measure things like air quality and acid rain 🪸

CHASING THE SUN

Yesterday’s total solar eclipse gave people in northern Siberia, Greenland, Iceland, Spain and Portugal the chance to gaze up at Totality – the awe-inspiring sight of the moon completely blocking the sun – for a maximum of 2 minutes 18 seconds. In 1973, astronomers in the UK and France figured out a way to observe Totality for 74 MINUTES 🌑
 The only problem? They would have to get their hands on a Concorde: the experimental supersonic airliner that was still in the prototype/testing stage. And then?
