in 1923, Cornelia Sorabji was Called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn.

A pioneer long before this milestone, she was the first woman to study law at Oxford University, the first woman to sit the Bachelor of Civil Laws examination there in 1892, and the first woman to practise law in both India and Britain, all before the S*x Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919 was passed.

When women finally became eligible to receive degrees at Oxford, Cornelia Sorabji returned to Britain in 1922 to collect hers, thirty years after completing the required examinations. She was also admitted to the Inn that same year, on 1 May 1922.

You can read more about her connection to the Inn on our website: https://ow.ly/Pvo550Z5cj0

Introducing the Lincoln’s Inn Pride Pin 🌈

Created to mark Pride Month, the pin celebrates inclusion, visibility and the LGBTQ+ community across the Inn and the wider legal profession.

The pin features the Lincoln’s Inn shield at its centre, framed by the colours of the Pride flag. It was first gifted to attendees at our Pride Celebration Dinner last week. We are now delighted to offer it for purchase in our online shop for £9.

Ian Park was published as an Ordinary Bencher of Lincoln's Inn during lunch in Hall today 🌟

Ian Park is a barrister at Essex Court Chambers and former Royal Navy Commodore, where a 23-year career culminated in his role as Head of Navy Legal. An international law specialist, he has advised the UK Government, NATO, and allies on International Humanitarian Law, the Law of the Sea, and International Criminal Law, with operational deployments to Afghanistan and the Middle East.

He holds a DPhil from Oxford, is a Visiting Lecturer at Yale Law School, and has authored five books. His current focus is the law governing emerging technologies in conflict — AI, autonomous systems, cyber operations, and military uses of outer space.

Ian was supported by Michael Todd KC and Sir Tim Eicke KC. He said of the appointment: "Lincoln’s Inn is an extraordinarily supportive and inclusive community and institution. It exemplifies all that is best about the Bar and I’m honoured and delighted, to have been elected a Bencher."

Recorded in the Inn’s Black Books is a letter dated 22 September 1945 from a lady thanking the Inn for opening its gardens to the public during the Second World War.

She wrote: “Your action in allowing the public to share with members of the Inn the peaceful beauty of their lawns and trees all through these years of bombing and mental strain has been appreciated by thousands.”

Over 80 years later, the gardens remain a place of calm in the heart of London. You can experience them for yourself at Open Gardens on Saturday 6 June 🌿https://ow.ly/6ppS50Z5bWF
