In Loving Memory of Sonmez Sami
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sonmez Sami,- the father / founder of Salieri.
Sonmez was a respected and much-loved restaurateur in London’s West End for over fifty years. Originally from his beloved Cyprus, he came to the United Kingdom to study engineering, funding his studies by working as a waiter in Knightsbridge. It was there that he discovered his true calling — hospitality.
He opened his first restaurant in Romford, where his tireless dedication quickly became evident. He often worked around the clock, sleeping on the restaurant booths so he could reach the morning markets and prepare for his first patrons of the day. There was no job he would not take on himself — his energy, perseverance, and hands-on approach became his trademark.
This passion and dedication led to further opening including establishments in Charing Cross Road and Kensington, before he returned to the Strand to take over Salieri, the restaurant where he had first apprenticed in the early 1970s. For the past forty years, Sonmez was the heart and soul of Salieri Restaurant, opposite the Savoy — a true institution of the West End. His warmth, generosity, and hospitality became legendary.
Known for his infectious smile and boundless energy, Sonmez created an atmosphere that was both welcoming and familial — filled with music, laughter, and endless plates of food shared with friends. He took pride in knowing everyone who walked through his doors, from market traders and local workers to generations of loyal patrons who travelled from across the world to dine at Salieri with new generations of their family to enjoy his company.
A proud Turkish Cypriot and a passionate advocate for family-run businesses, Sonmez was recognised in 2018 when Salieri received the award for Best Small Business in the UK. His life’s work was defined by generosity, hard work, and support for those who worked for him.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Burial to take place Monday 27th Trent Park Cemetery . Cockfosters.
