Our May Ball last Saturday was a special event, as it was our first party at a new venue, a two-level space with balcony views of the stage and an industrial chic with glazed bricks and exposed girders, combined with chandeliers and ornate mirrors—every bit what you might expect a speakeasy to be like. The place also has skylights in the roof, and at this time of year it was still light when the party started, so it wasn’t until the sun went down around 8.30 that the full atmosphere revealed itself. Thanks to Benoit Viellefon, an old friend of the Candlelight Club, who brought his gypsy-jazz Hot Club band along, and to The Gatsby Girls for their dance routines. Hosting was the Lord of Cabaret Misrule himself, Champagne Charlie, and on the decks was DJ Baroness Jojo of The Bee's Knees. At the beginning we had a lesson in dancing the Charleston from Russell and Sara. Up on the mezzanine level we had the Krausz Jewellery pop-up vintage bling shop and Lucius of Sphinx Tarot slinging cards. Thanks most of all, of course, to the guests who came in their flapper finery. Our next party will be on 19th September, and will mark 16 years of our speakeasy shenanigans…
