The Candlelight Club

The Candlelight Club Award-winning pop-up 1920s speakeasy with live entertainment, cocktails and dining See the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11sUY9sX_rk

A clandestine 1920s speakeasy party in a secret London venue completely lit by candles, with live period jazz bands, cabaret and vintage vinylism. The bar dispenses vintage cocktails and the kitchens offer bar snacks and sharing platters, as well as a fine-dining set menu option. Guests receive an email two days before revealing the secret location and are encouraged to dress in 1920s outfits—so p

ull on your flapper dress and get ready to Charleston! "The closest you'll find to an authentic Jazz Age experience in central London. Its unique ambience, fuelled by hundreds of candles, is truly a scene to behold." —Time Out

Our May Ball last Saturday was a special event, as it was our first party at a new venue, a two-level space with balcony views of the stage and an industrial chic with glazed bricks and exposed girders, combined with chandeliers and ornate mirrors—every bit what you might expect a speakeasy to be like. The place also has skylights in the roof, and at this time of year it was still light when the party started, so it wasn’t until the sun went down around 8.30 that the full atmosphere revealed itself. Thanks to Benoit Viellefon, an old friend of the Candlelight Club, who brought his gypsy-jazz Hot Club band along, and to The Gatsby Girls for their dance routines. Hosting was the Lord of Cabaret Misrule himself, Champagne Charlie, and on the decks was DJ Baroness Jojo of The Bee's Knees. At the beginning we had a lesson in dancing the Charleston from Russell and Sara. Up on the mezzanine level we had the Krausz Jewellery pop-up vintage bling shop and Lucius of Sphinx Tarot slinging cards. Thanks most of all, of course, to the guests who came in their flapper finery. Our next party will be on 19th September, and will mark 16 years of our speakeasy shenanigans…

It was an emotional night at our Spring Ball on 21st March, as it would be our last event at this particular venue, a ballroom in Balham that had been our home for the last three years—from our next party we'll be at a new venue, a revamped Edwardian tram shed. We had live music from Candlelight stalwarts the Shirt Tail Stompers, burlesque from Bonnie Fox, hosting by Amber Topaz and DJing by Holly of The Bee's Knees. In the bar area Michelle of Krausz Jewellery was running her pop-up store, while in the side room Lucius of Sphinx Tarot was plying his fortune-telling trade. At the beginning of the evening we also had a dance lesson from George and Sarah, teaching us how to do the foxtrot. Many thanks to all who came and helped mark the latest episode in the Candlelight Club's 15-year history.

By chance St Valentine's Day fell on a Saturday this year and we held a pink-hued ball in celebration. It began with a very well-attended dance lesson in the foxtrot, followed by burlesque from Miss Betsy Rose and live jazz music from Ritzy Palooza, all introduced by Cupid's little helper Champagne Charlie. In between the iive entertainment DJ Aila was spinning platters. In the bar area Michelle Krausz was running her vintage jewellery pop-up and in a side room tarot readers Andrea and Ms Firechild were telling fortunes. Thanks to all who came and added to the joyous atmosphere (especially those who joined the conga line and limbo contest…).
