Hello dear friends of The Zanzibar Club,
We hope you’ve been doing well, keeping safe, and like us are pumped to soon be able to mingle and enjoy the sunshine with our friends!
With the recent news circulating in our community, we would like to note -

The Zanzibar Club as a business that we all knew and loved is in fact permanently closed. We are not reopening this year.
What is set to open in June is a new business venture by the company that have purchased the premises after our closure. It is a new business with new leadership, who have decided to use the name of ‘Zanzibar’ for the new venue they are opening.

So this is our last goodbye from all of us who worked to keep The Zanzibar Club living and breathing music, we are still heartbroken the pandemic has taken away from us 30 years of legacy and community we’ve all built. However, we believe the future will be brighter and we look forward to seeing you around!
Yours - the Zanzi team

Covid-19 has been a massive kick in the teeth for everyone. There have been a tragic amount of lost lives. Peoples hopes, dreams and livelihoods completely destroyed.
The entertainment and music industry has had the roughest ride of all. With business restrictions and lack of proper guidance, music venues will be among the last ones to reopen.

The Zanzibar Club has been a true survivor over the past 30 years, but with the current climate of uncertainty and the probability of remaining closed for a year, we have had to make the heartbreaking decision to permanently close our venue.
With very limited time left on our lease and too many years of wear and tear on our building structure puts us in a financially unattainable position to reopen.

From all the Zanzibar crew past and present we would like to say a huge thank you to all the performers that have graced the stage at Zanzibar and brought music and joy into many peoples lives. Thank you to all gig goers, friends that have turned into family - you all have made Zanzibar feel like a second home for us. We appreciate everyone for their loyal support over the years and wish you all the best for the future.

Following the amazing Sunday news of £1.57bn government investment for cultural sector, we're now to await futher information.
We're still to see in what way this money is to be redistributed between different sectors of performing arts (theatres, venues etc), what in grants and what in loans, and how we will be able to appy for the funding.
And even more important, still waiting updated limelines on when we can expect to reopen.
Let's keep our voices heard and push for these further instructions to happen ASAP and get the ball rolling 🙌

Oliver Dowden says the aid for theatres, gig venues and museums aims to preserve culture's "crown jewels".

ANNOUNCEMENT: GRASSROOTS MUSIC VENUES RECEIVE LIFELINE

Britain’s globally renowned arts, culture and heritage industries will receive a world-leading £1.57 billion rescue package to help weather the impact of coronavirus, the government announced today.

Thousands of organisations across a range of sectors including the performing arts and theatres, heritage, historic palaces, museums, galleries, live music and independent cinema will be able to access emergency grants and loans.

The money, which represents the biggest ever one-off investment in UK culture, will provide a lifeline to vital cultural and heritage organisations across the country hit hard by the pandemic. It will help them stay afloat while their doors are closed. Funding to restart paused projects will also help support employment, including freelancers working in these sectors.

This new package will be available across the country and ensure the future of these multi billion-pound industries are secured.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:
“From iconic theatre and musicals, mesmerising exhibitions at our world-class galleries to gigs performed in local basement venues, the UK’s cultural industry is the beating heart of this country. This money will help safeguard the sector for future generations, ensuring arts groups and venues across the UK can stay afloat and support their staff whilst their doors remain closed and curtains remain down.”

Oliver Dowden Culture Secretary said
“Our arts and culture are the soul of our nation. They make our country great and are the lynchpin of our world-beating and fast growing creative industries. I understand the grave challenges the arts face and we must protect and preserve all we can for future generations. Today we are announcing a huge support package of immediate funding to tackle the funding crisis they face. I said we would not let the arts down, and this massive investment shows our level of commitment.”

Rishi Sunak, Chancellor of the Exchequer said:
“Our world-renowned galleries, museums, heritage sites, music venues and independent cinemas are not only critical to keeping our economy thriving, employing more than 700,000 people, they’re the lifeblood of British culture. That’s why we’re giving them the vital cash they need to safeguard their survival, helping to protect jobs and ensuring that they can continue to provide the sights and sounds that Britain is famous for.”

This unprecedented package include a £1.15 billion support pot for cultural organisations in England delivered through a mix of grants and loans. This will be made up of £270 million of repayable finance and £880 million grants.

The new funding will also mean an extra £188 million for
the devolved administrations in Northern Ireland (£33 million), Scotland (£97 million) and Wales (£59 million).

Music Venue Trust warmly welcomes this unprecedented intervention into Britain's world class live music scene. We'd like to thank the Secretary of State and the team at DCMS for the opportunity to work closely together throughout this crisis to develop genuine solutions to the challenges faced by grassroots music venues. This fund provides the opportunity to stabilise and protect our vibrant and vital network of venues and gives us the time we need to create a plan to Reopen Every Venue Safely.

On behalf of every grassroots music venue in the UK we would like to take this opportunity to thank every music fan, every artist, every activist, and every one of you, our people, who got this done.

'Without people, you're nothing' - Joe Strummer.

We have you, and that's everything. Thank you.

and because this affects everyone!
The livelihood of live music industry supports the careers of musicians, composers, songwriters, rehearsal rooms, promoters, booking agents, press, photographers, writers,
venue managers, hospitality staff, sound technicians, production staff, crew, electricians, security - just of the top of my head!
In UK this industry supports 210,000 jobs and adds £4.5bn to the economy, creating the second largest live music industry in the world - and it is unprecedented that there is no word of support.

The demands are clear. This letter going to Secretary Oliver Dowden, Treasury, DCMS and the Prime Minister. You too can support by following this initiative and sharing your experiences!

We've avaited a government desicion only for it to be a rewording of the already vague bussiness stipulations.

Live music venues are unable to open with the current safety regulations, and if we stay closed for longer without proper support, we might never open at all!

Once again, Music Venue Trust is fighting for us all and laying it out for them as simple as possible!

We are sure you will all have seen the Government's Road Map to Reopening.

Taking a look at the Road Map, we are concerned it doesn't seem to establish an actual route to grassroots music venues reopening. So we made our own.

Grassroot Music Venues lie at the very core of music industry and local communities! Everyone know how important they are for upcoming artists, but also as a meeting ground, a place where for a few hours all our worries melt away and we are fully in the moment celebrating art and life!
Yesterday's decision to allow opening of more bussinesses did not even mention music venues. It means we remain shut, with right reasoning to protect the public, but also meaning to put our survival at risk.

Music Venue Trust is coming forth in the name of all of us and stating our case in front of the government through this Open Letter. To support, share this letter on your socials, write to your local MP, write to your local newspaper - like we will do too! ✊

Good few months deep since the closedowns of music venues - and still absolutely no governmental guidance. We've been wrecking our brains on what how when do to, and each scenario is a struggle.
Music Venue Trust has been representing grassroot music venues and gathering facts and stats from both venues and audiences.
Let us know what you think in the comments bellow - how confortable would you be to attend gigs still in this year?

Music Venues Trust finds that only 36% of British public feel confident in safety of returning to live gigs

This is a time of change! Time to make our whole lives an act of rebellion. Time to protest against fear, hatred, violence and corruption. Protest for justice, truth, love, acceptance and connection. Each one of us, each in the way we can.
Volence and racial injustice can no longer be condoned. Black lives matter, and tyranny, forced brutality, abusive law enforcement policies have no place in human society.

Here gathered is a comprehensive but not exhaustive list of ways to help the cause with useful links for donations, books to read, documentaries to watch, petitions to sign re US and UK gatherers from other sources. https://docs.google.com/document/d/11zZm-TDifMM-AQBID66E8DKUweski8vL7wTFN9ka5ys/edit?usp=sharing
