WHS Asha From Wallace to Delhi! Keep up to date with the latest from the WHS ASHA team (Oct 2016)

28/09/2020

The fight for survival continues in Delhi’s slums as the women and children are now severely malnourished. With little or no income they cannot eat, and the situation is worsening daily. Asha is working tirelessly to prevent starvation.

Can you help a mother and child to survive by supporting my campaign to provide a highly nutritious and delicious Laddoo
(a round-shaped Indian sweet)?

It costs just £1 per day to provide Laddoo for a mother and child. Will join me in trying to feed 1000 women and children?

If you wish to donate, please click on this link. If you can’t donate at this time, would you consider sharing this with others?

The campaign will close in 1 month, on 24th October.

An honest smile is one of the best takeaways. This month has been excellent for Asha as amazing teams from the United Kingdom visited and served its slum dwellers. They not only brought joy to the Asha slums, but the beautiful gifts of smile and learning accompanied it. A team...continue reading

Our time in India is drawing to an end; it has been an unforgettable experience.

Our last day in the Asha centre began with an English lesson about the articles of clothing, in which the boys excitedly described what they were wearing. The boys then surprised us with their wonderful origami skills in the lotus flower crafting. It was very touching to see their joy and enthusiasm in this and especially when one boy crafted an origami tulip to give to Mrs Thampi. We then had a final competitive game of bucket ball with the Asha boys against the Wallace team. They never failed to amaze us with their competitiveness, skills and happiness as they played.

When we began to say our final goodbyes, but the boys demanded to dance before they leave, in which we all danced to a Hindi song of their choice before they left. There was pure joy in the room we laughed, joked and danced together.

The girls arrived for their program next and enjoyed creating colourful tissue paper flowers, playing games and being taught English. The excitement flowed out of them as they showed off their creations and they adored having their photos taken.

After a beautifully made lunch by Tressi and the Asha ladies, we were dressed in our sarees for the final ceremony. The final ceremony was a beautiful and emotional time filled with a dancing performance from 4 Asha girls and speeches from the ASHA ladies and Toushar (an Asha ambassador) and his sister. Then the time came to say goodbye. It was so difficult to leave these amazing children who we had gotten to know so well over the week, and they flooded us with gifts, hugs and kisses. We will always keep them in our hearts and never forget the joy they have showed us and the love that the Asha centre was filled with.

It’s impossible to describe how incredible this experience has been. We know we will never forget the children, the work of Asha and all the joyful people we met. This experience has without a doubt changed everyone one of us.

Goodbye India❤️

We began our day, as usual, by making our way to the Mayapuri slum. In the morning we played some more bucket ball with the boys. English lessons and crafts then followed.
A few more of us then got the chance to go on a lane visit around the slum. We visited houses and the railway tracks where once again the closeness of the homes to the busy railway shocked many of us.
Next we had lunch in the midst of great company, as Tushar and Deepak (former ASHA students)joined us, and they were able to tell us more about their own stories. Hearing about their success in education really highlighted just how much ASHA can transform lives. We all really hope that with ASHA, the kids who we have been working with over the past week will also be able to achieve such great things.

Following another great day in the slum, we made our way to the Humayun tomb, which was was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent. We were all amazed by the beautiful sandstone building where we took many selfies ( Colton) and enjoyed the view before making our way back to the hotel. Finally, ventured out for dinner at Daitchi where we enjoyed some delicious Chinese-Indian cuisine.

Again we started the day back in Mayapuri, teaching and playing with the kids we’ve come to know and love. After a severely competitive game of bucketball, English teaching, dancing and craft making, another group went on a lane visit. They got to go into some of the houses and to really get to see what everyday life is like for the people living there. The afternoon saw us spend more time with the girls making bracelets and chatting to them about their dreams for the future.

Once we said our goodbyes to the kids at the end of the day, we went straight to Sarojini Nagar to pick our Sarees in every colour you could imagine, whilst we watched Thomas barter for the ‘best price’ with every person at every given opportunity.

To finish the day we were honoured to join another team from Northern Ireland, some Asha Ambassadors, Dr Kiran and her husband Freddy for an incredibly authentic Indian dinner, entertainment (AKA questionable dancing from everyone) and a chance to ask Dr Kiran or the students all of our questions.
