Well said.

A quick message...

It is no secret that this year has been incredibly tough and that small independent businesses like ours are being beaten down at every corner. With rising National Insurance contributions, increased supplier costs, energy bills, rates and everything in between, staying afloat and maintaining the smile is becoming harder by the week.

While big businesses have buffers, small independents rely on every single sale to cover costs, and those costs are rising exponentially. On top of that, we are all anxious about what the next budget might bring, wondering how much more small businesses can endure.

We’re not after sympathy; everyone’s feeling the squeeze. But what we do need is your support: a like, a share, a kind review or making the conscious decision to support local businesses. For us, small independent businesses, these acts are the difference between staying open and having to close our doors.

We at Andalucia are passionate about what we offer. Our prices reflect the premium quality of our ingredients, the skill and time behind the scenes, and the experience we aim to give every guest. Because it matters!
We understand that it’s hard out there right now. That is why we have some great promotions to cater to all budgets (without sacrificing flavour or experience). We have our Lunch Tasting Menu or our Triple the Tapas, which is 3 tapas dishes and a drink for only £23 per person, and of course, our infamous Tipsy Tapas, which is bottomless drinks (within reason 😉) and tapas dishes for just £40 per person. All promotions are available on our website.

When you support local, yes, it might sometimes cost a little more than the big chains. But you're not just buying a meal or product. You're helping real, everyday people pay their staff fairly, keep their doors open, and keep their dreams alive.

Thank You for All Your Love and Support ❤️

We want to sincerely thank everyone for the incredible love and compassion shown towards 1573 Bar & Grill – the only independent restaurant business in Highcross.

Many of our guests have asked why we had to close. Below are some of the key reasons (not an exhaustive list):

1. Increased National Insurance Contributions – from an average of 10% to 13%, and a drop in the threshold from £12,000 to £5,000, even for part-timers. This alone increased our wage bill by over 20%.

2. Wage Increases – staff wages have risen nearly 18% in the past two years.

3. Energy Costs – soaring energy prices have made it unsustainable.

4. Highcross Service Charges – significant increases due to many empty units, yet all we receive in return are bin collections and numerous costly operational restrictions (many of which add unnecessary compliance costs).

5. Business Rates – continue to rise year after year.

6. Supplier Costs – up by around 20%. We simply can’t sell a bowl of chips for £6 just to keep up.

7. Falling Footfall – shoppers are moving to Fosse Park for free parking, leaving the city centre emptier.

8. City Centre Challenges – an increase in begging and antisocial behaviour, with individuals often walking into restaurants and disturbing guests.

9. Rising Crime – two knife incidents in October alone left us with no choice but to prioritise staff and guest safety.

10. Negative Press Coverage – repeated misleading reviews from Leicestershire Mercury (four in a row) hurt our reputation, even after we provided photographic evidence disproving their claims. Sadly, such reporting only harms local independent businesses further.

Enough is enough.
It’s heartbreaking, but many more independent businesses may follow the same path soon if things don’t change.

We are sorry to announce that 1573 Bar & Grill is now officially closed.

The restaurant was opened in 2009 and after 16 years of service we are permanently closing.

This decision was made with great care after much consideration of ongoing challenges. Though it’s difficult to say goodbye, we are deeply grateful for the years of support, friendship, and memories shared with our community.

Thank you to all our regular customers, staff members and each and one of you for being part of our story - it has been our honour to serve you.

We’ve been working behind the scenes on some exciting new dishes, and they’re finally ready to hit your plate.

Look out for delicious new starters like hummus served with naan bread, chorizo bites, and smoky paprika chicken wings🍗

For mains, we’ve added a Halloumi Burger, tender Duck Leg, Spinach & Ricotta Tortelloni, and a new twist on our Pan Roasted Salmon. And yes – those paprika chicken wings are so good, they’ve made it onto the mains too!

Dine in History at 1573 Bar & Grill!🏰

Step into a piece of Leicester’s past at 1573 Bar & Grill, housed in the Old (Free) Grammar School, one of England’s oldest school buildings, dating back to 1573 - the Elizabethan era. Once a church, it was repurposed using materials from St. Peter’s Church to create a school by royal decree from Queen Elizabeth I. Now, over 450 years later, it stands as a Grade II* listed building, offering a unique blend of historic charm and contemporary dining.

1573 is one of the oldest schoolhouses in the UK. The school was built around 1573 using stone, timber and lead from St Peter´s church that had been demolished following an appeal to Queen Elizabeth I. The royal coat of arms is still displayed on the side of the building. Details of the school curriculum have survived and can be seen inside the building as well as outside at the back of the building. At its height, around 130 boys studied here, but by the 1830s attendance had fallen dramatically as rival schools opened in town. It closed in 1841.

Since opening in 2009, 1573 Bar & Grill has become a cornerstone of Leicester’s culinary scene, celebrated for its exceptional steaks, fresh seafood, and much more- all served with a side of history in a warm, rustic setting. With the original structures of the building in place, it gives the restaurant an authentic and historic atmosphere. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely lunch on the sun-trapped terrace or a romantic evening indoors, every meal is a journey through time.
