This is one truth that will hurt, A LOT, to those who don't understand and want to feel comfortable in just enjoying the sound of the blues at surface level, especially those with racist agendas. To those who do, I appreciate the nod of recognition and keep sharp with awareness.
Why many people around the world love to hear the "blues" because it sounds cool? Or is it about nostalgia of the expressed "Jim Crow" and "Black" lived experiences of those passed? Is it about if I an African diaspora woman born within Europe, especially sings the blues, that I'm a representative of the"Jet Black woman" who will sing out that experience to those who love to hear the "Black Experience" and call it authentic? I am no spokesperson or song representative of the American Blues. It is a sound to me that resonates being of dual cultural experiences of an African born in Europe combined, very different to an African born in America. As James Baldwin stated, "know from whence you came, for there is no limit to where you can go."Also Zora Neale Hurston,"How it feels to be colored me."
I resonate with this Blues man. John Lee Ho**er. My first introduction to Blues aged 22.
