Ever wondered why some beers feel crisp and refreshing, while others seem rich and warming?

It’s not just about strength; ABV (alcohol by volume) shapes the flavour, body, and feel of your beer.

🍺 Low ABV (3–4%) – light, crisp, and easy-going. Great for long afternoons, BBQs, and that “just one more” moment.

🍺 Mid ABV (4–5.5%) – balanced and full of flavour without being heavy. It's the sweet spot for most styles, including The Craft Beer Man’s pale ale, helles lager, and bitter (all around 4%).

🍺 High ABV (6%+) – rich, intense, and often a slow sipper with warming notes and deeper malt character.

But higher doesn’t always mean better. It’s about what fits the moment. And the food!

Do you know what the difference is between a Helles, a Pilsner, and a Kölsch?

🍻 Helles - German for “bright” or “light”, this Munich-born lager is smooth, golden, and malt-forward. Expect soft, bready, and biscuity malt notes, a gentle sweetness, and just enough hops to balance it all. It’s brewed for everyday enjoyment; comforting, clean, and quietly confident.

🌾 Pilsner - First brewed in the Czech city of Plzeň, the Pilsner is crisper, drier, and more hop-forward than a Helles. The use of Saaz hops gives it a subtle floral aroma and a pleasant, peppery bite. German Pilsners tend to be even paler and sharper, while Czech versions have a touch more malt sweetness.

🍐 Kölsch - (pronounced “kerlsh”) Technically an ale, brewed like a lager. Fermented warm with ale yeast, it develops light fruity esters - think soft hints of apple, pear, or white grape - then cold-conditioned to smooth everything out. The result? Delicate, dry, and slightly fruity, it is the perfect bridge between lager and ale.

Last week was a busy one as The Craft Beer Man once again got involved with SIBA, The Society of Independent Brewers - SIBA, annual awards.

The SIBA awards are a celebration of independent beers, and winning an award is quite the privilege and accolade. As you may appreciate, it's imperative that they have an independent, non-associated company set up the cellar services for each beer in the competition.

The Craft Beer Man doesn't enter this competition, and, having no potential for conflict of interest, has been providing this service for several years, ensuring a level playing field for all entries. And with ninety beers involved, the competition is fierce!

Once the awards were handed out at the end of the week and this weekend, the general public has been enjoying the beers and passing their own judgments.

Our congratulations to Signature Brew for winning the overall accolade at this year's event!
