To all our patrons past and present.
The last few weeks has probably been the most difficult decision that I’ve ever had to make. To say that we’ve been apart of the Smeaton community for over 50 years and have owned and run the bar for around 27 years, shows it’s not just a business as some might think but much much more. This has been a large part of our life and indeed some of our staffs lives, as you know have served the community at the Alpha for over 20 years which is no easy job eh Fiona 😬!
The truth is that despite the smoking ban, the many many changes in licensing laws, the changes to driving regs etc more recently, it really has been a difficult and downhill road as only people in our trade could really explain. Sadly Corals next door closed their door due to gambling regs which was another disappointing assessment of the way things were going and to our detriment as it supported our trade. (Who would ever have thought of a bookie closing their doors eh!).
To ensure the long term economic viability of the Alpha we took the strategic decision about 8 months ago to split the Alpha in half in order to reduce overheads (such as paying well over £1000 a month for the likes of sports) with often less and less people coming to the bar throughout this period especially throughout the week due to economic and other factors. We thought that this would still allow the Alpha to survive even though it would have been in a smaller capacity. Then came this dreaded virus which has sadly affected so many lives in different ways. While the off trade has benefited the on trade has possibly had its final nail into the coffin. If only it was only going to be a few weeks as we may all have expected when this all started back in March, however the stark reality is that with social distancing likely to be implemented in July/August a small venue the size of the Alpha would be lucky to have in a dozen people and how can this ever be possible? Sadly the Alpha was only a one string pony with it only being a wet business relying on drink sales alone. It would sadly be a slow death.
For this reason we have decided to relocate all our staff from the Alpha to the Windsor thereby avoiding any redundancies. We have started to create a brand ‘New Windsor’ which will incorporate the amazing atmosphere of the Alpha staff. Fiona whom has been a large part of the heart beat at the Alpha for over 20 years (since she was a wee lassy) will now become the Manageress at The New Windsor.
I hope you can understand that the decision we took has been anything but easy but one that was sadly unavoidable. Fiona and all our new combined team at ‘The New Windsor’ look forward to inviting you to a new chapter in our lives!
