Congratulations to Blessed Remedy Spirits for launching the world’s first mezcal in a paper bottle and, in doing so, the first paper bottle in Mexico.
By pairing artisanal Espadín mezcal with the Frugal Bottle - produced in California by our US manufacturing partner Monterey W**e Company - they are bringing low-carbon innovation directly to the agave spirits industry across two continents:
Mexico: Mezcólogo Mezcal Artesanal Espadín is launching via Chedraui stores and Amazon.
Australia: Metoro Mezcal Artesanal Espadín will hit shelves later this year.

A brilliant example of centuries-old craft meeting modern packaging innovation, as Blessed Remedy Spirits founder Eberth Vera puts it, ‘respecting tradition does not mean standing still’.

We couldn’t agree more, and this is just the beginning, with Blessed Remedy Spirits looking at opportunities to take its paper-bottled mezcals into the US, Europe and other international markets.

For decades, a heavy bottle was supposed to signal a serious w**e.
As The Grape Reset puts it, packaging has become ‘w**e’s biggest climate fight’ and the industry is finally putting its bottles on a diet.
The article looks at everything from lightweight glass and the Bottle Weight Accord to bag-in-box, kegs and alternative formats and, of course, paper bottles.
Enter the Frugal Bottle:
84% lower carbon footprint than standard glass
5x lighter than a traditional bottle
Made from 94% recycled paperboard
Trimming a few grams off glass is progress and sometimes switching the format entirely is transformation.

Science meets tradition in the UK’s first Greek olive oil in a paper bottle. 🫒
Founded by physics students Yuko Liao and Eliott Menard, Trigly combines family-grown extra virgin olive oil from the Peloponnese with lower-carbon British packaging innovation.
The single-origin oil is made from hand-picked Koroneiki olives and packaged in the Frugal Bottle, whose opaque paperboard outer blocks light completely. This helps protect the oil against photo-oxidation, one of the main causes of flavour and nutrient degradation.
The bottle also:
♻️ Has an outer made from 94% recycled paperboard
🌍 Has a carbon footprint 84% lower than a standard glass bottle
🎨 Provides a distinctive 360-degree canvas for Trigly’s tree-molecule design
It’s a brilliant meeting of Greek olive-growing heritage, scientific curiosity and packaging innovation.

Sustainable packaging has to work for everyone – otherwise, it simply doesn’t work.
Packaging innovation cannot deliver one benefit at the expense of another. To replace glass at scale, a paper bottle must perform at every stage of its journey:
⚙️ For producers: It must integrate with filling operations, protect the product and perform throughout distribution.
🎨 For brands: It must safeguard product quality while offering the shelf presence and storytelling potential of a 360° printable surface.
♻️ For consumers: It should be lightweight, shatterproof and easy to separate for recycling at home.
The Frugal Bottle was engineered with all three in mind, combining a 100% recycled paperboard outer with a carbon footprint up to 84% lower than a standard glass bottle.
Real progress happens when sustainability, commercial performance and design work together.
What matters most to your brand when evaluating alternative packaging?

Lower-carbon packaging, made in Canada. 🇨🇦

Our partner KinsBrae Packaging manufactures the KB Bottle locally in Ontario using Frugalpac technology, giving brands across Canada and North America access to a lower-carbon bottle produced closer to where their products are filled and sold.

Local production helps reduce the need to transport empty bottles over long distances, while supporting shorter, more resilient supply chains.
With a 100% recycled paperboard outer and a carbon footprint up to 84% lower than a standard glass bottle, the KB Bottle combines sustainability, practicality and standout 360° design.

British innovation. Canadian manufacturing. Lower-carbon packaging ready for North American brands.

How do you take paper bottles from an emerging format to 14 million units a year? You engineer for industrial scale.

Designed in Suffolk, our next-generation FBAM-2 is a scalable, multi-lane platform developed to assemble Frugal Bottles closer to the facilities where they are filled.

What FBAM-2 delivers:
Capacity: Approximately 14 million bottles annually in its standard three-lane configuration - more than five times the capacity of FBAM-1.
Automation: Advanced automation and modular controls designed for efficient, scalable production.
Flexibility: Multi-lane configurations supporting different production requirements.
Localisation: Installation at bottling plants and packaging facilities closer to existing filling operations.

Speed alone isn’t enough. Commercial success requires reliable automation that makes local paper-bottle production competitive at industrial scale.

When the Siemens Pod-cart came to Frugalpac… 🎙️

Our Product Director, JP Grogan, stepped inside Siemens mobile studio to discuss how we’re scaling low-carbon paper bottles to commercial volumes.

JP explains that packaging accounts for around half the carbon footprint of a bottle of w**e. And as global w**e and spirits production generates 33 billion glass bottles annually producing 18.5 million tons of carbon, changing the bottle presents a major opportunity for the drinks industry.

Now Siemens automation helps power our FBAM-2 platform, enabling it to manufacture up to 14 million Frugal Bottles a year – each with a carbon footprint up to six times lower than standard glass.

Made with 100% recycled paperboard and an easily separable and monomaterial liner, the Frugal Bottle is designed with recycling in mind.

Thanks to Siemens for visiting Suffolk to see how British engineering is helping lower-carbon packaging scale globally.

Thank you Packaging Scotland for featuring our agreement with Siemens Financial Services.

We now offer a structured lease-purchase route for qualifying customers investing in the FBAM-2 platform (subject to standard lending criteria) which is designed to make it easier to invest in local Frugal Bottle production without meeting the full cost upfront. This builds on our wider relationship with Siemens, which supplies the advanced automation components for FBAM-2.

For packaging companies, drinks producers and licensed manufacturing partners, the collaboration supports:

Greater financial flexibility: A structured route to financing FBAM-2.
Advanced automation: Siemens’ components supporting efficient, scalable production.
Localised capacity: The ability to assemble bottles closer to filling operations and increase output as demand grows.

Packaging innovation only delivers real value when businesses can adopt it at scale and this partnerships is helping to turn our innovation into production-ready infrastructure.

Shatterproof. Lightweight. Ready for real life 🍷
Carbon metrics matter but packaging also has to perform in the real world.
With a carbon footprint at least 84% lower than glass, Frugal Bottle 2 combines lower-carbon materials with practical benefits for brands and consumers:
🎪 Made for events: No broken glass, ideal for festivals, venues and outdoor occasions.
📦 Lighter to transport: At just 71g, it’s around six times lighter than a standard glass bottle – reducing packaging weight across deliveries and e-commerce.
🧺 Easy to carry: Lighter for consumers to handle, pack and take wherever they’re going.
♻️ Simple to separate: The 100% recycled paperboard outer separates simply from the food-grade pouch ready for recycling.

Packaging that works harder, while weighing less.
