Did you know The Woolpack is a 16th-century inn - it was a vital trade point and the ultimate toll-dodging location? 🐑

Sitting where Bolton Lane forks into Westerfield Road and Tuddenham Road, this 16th-century landmark was historically used to outsmart the taxman! While the local turnpike gate collected fees from every carriage, our regulars were busy finding creative ways to avoid the bill. From the “stable trick” of unhitching horses, walking them to avoid the toll, to whispers of smuggling tunnels running deep beneath the floorboards, this pub has always been one step ahead.

Others used a sneaky “side gate” lane to avoid these tolls… plenty of local history to uncover with your next pint, and we’re just a stone’s throw from Christchurch Mansion for more, history lovers! Ipswich Museums
