Not every gift needs a big production. Sometimes it's the small one that lands properly.

The Pocket Hamper is one bottle I've picked myself (not a dusty afterthought), a little artisan cheese, something sweet, and a tasting card explaining why I chose that bottle and what I'd serve it with. From around ยฃ25.

It's the gift that says "I thought about this" without shouting about it. Ideal for a thank you, a birthday, or a host who already has everything. Built to order like all of them, and I'll do the card in my own handwriting if you'll trust my penmanship.

Midweek reality: you're tired, the takeaway's ordered, and you want a glass that doesn't make you think too hard.

So here's my pick for a Monday night: a red with enough fruit to not be dull, enough structure to stand up to pizza and burgers, and enough character that you won't feel short-changed. Around the ยฃ15 mark, because decent wine shouldn't need a lecture or a second mortgage.

Pop in and tell me what you're eating tonight. I'll point you at the right bottle and you can be home before the garlic bread goes cold.

Every hamper leaves here with a note in my handwriting. Not a printed slip, not a sticker. The name, the occasion, and a line or two about the wine, written out by hand โ€” and sixteen years in, my penmanship is still a work in progress.

It matters to me because it's the closest I get to being at the table when the gift is opened. If you've ordered a Signature, you get a proper letter telling you why each bottle is in there and what I'd serve it with.

My pen is sharpened and my spelling checker is on standby. Order through the shop on Vicar Lane.

Yes, it's September. Yes, the tinsel is still in the loft. But our Christmas hampers are officially open for business, and there's a reason we're this early: every single one is built to order, by hand, in the shop. The earlier you order, the less panic December brings.

This year there are four tiers, from the Pocket to the Signature, each packed with wine I've chosen and tasted myself, proper cheese, decent treats, and a gift note I'll write out by hand (be grateful for small mercies).

Pop in to Vicar Lane, or drop us a message, and we'll talk you through them. Christmas can wait. The hampers can't.

New on the shelf and worth a proper introduction. ๐Ÿท

This is the Fernando de Castilla 'Fino en Rama', Saca Primavera 2025, from Jerez. For the uninitiated (no shame in it), fino is the dry, delicate sherry that ages for years under a layer of yeast called flor. 'En rama' means it's bottled straight from the cask, unfiltered, so you get the full, honest thing. Spring release, and it shows.

What it actually tastes like: crisp and bone dry, a proper fino. Saline, sea-air edge, something ye**ty and bready from the flor, and a clean almond finish. Vibrant and fresh, and dangerously easy to keep going back to. I'd call it the palate cleanser of the wine world, and I mean that as a compliment.

I stock it because sherry is one of those categories too many people skip, and that feels like a shame. The people who know, know. This is the bottle I'd hand to anyone who thinks sherry is just your nan's tipple. It's the perfect way to start a meal, or an evening.

Give it jamon, a bit of cured ham, Manchego, olives, or anything from the sea, and you're in classic tapas territory. Honest, unpretentious, brilliant with food.

We're pouring it in the shop this week, so pop in and try a glass before you commit.

Friday night, and the cobbles of Vicar Lane are calling! ๐Ÿท๐Ÿ‡

The wine bar opens TONIGHT. We've got the cheese board loaded, the glasses polished, and a few bottles on the go that Sean is properly excited about (ask him which one - he never holds back).

No pretension, no jargon. Just good wine, good company, and a proper way to ease into the weekend.

Fancy a cheeky glass? Pop into the shop this evening, or drop us a message to book a spot.

This is what a table of four looks like when they mean business ๐Ÿ‡

Grapes, olives, cured meats, artisan cheese, stuffed peppers, crackers... honestly, we'd have stayed all evening too. This is exactly the kind of spread we love putting together in the wine bar โ€” proper food, the right glass alongside it, good company.

Wednesday through Saturday evenings, pop in and we'll sort you out. No pretension, just good things on a board. ๐Ÿง€

There's something about a warm August evening, good company, and a well-made spritz that just makes everything feel right. ๐ŸŠ

We're open Wednesday through Saturday evenings as a pop-up wine bar, and this weekend's weather feels like it's giving us a nudge.

Whether it's an Aperol Spritz in the courtyard, a glass of something genuinely lovely from the shelves, or just a quiet drink with no fuss, we'd love to see you.

No dress code, no pretension. Just good wine, good food, and good company in one of Howden's favourite spots.
