A summer afternoon of live music at The Highlander.

Join us as we celebrate 18 years of live music at one of Hitchin’s best-loved pubs with an afternoon of great music, good company and a soundtrack from the legendary Sten King.

Close To The Bone brings together five exceptional musicians with local roots:

Dave Keech – trombone
Isaac Keech – piano
Joe Keech – drums
Colin Watling – saxophone
Rob Rickenberg – bass

Expect two relaxed sets of world-class musicianship, groove, improvisation and musical conversation from a band featuring father and sons playing together alongside long-standing friends and collaborators.

Before and after the band, Sten King will be spinning records to keep the garden moving all day.

Whether you’re a jazz fan, a music lover, or simply looking for the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon, grab a drink, find a spot in the garden and join us.

This Wednesday 13th May 2026 we present Aaron Liddard on Saxophone.

In his prolific and wide-ranging career, Aaron has contributed to many different musical experiences, including working with Amy Winehouse, Prince, and Maceo Parker, and in genres ranging from hip-hop and rock to Latin music and gospel. But jazz has always been the closest music to his heart. “Jazz is the only living musical art-form that is not defined by its exclusions,” says Aaron. “At its truest, jazz is an evolving aural tradition. As a musician with myriad musical influences, jazz is the only home that allows me to fully explore.”

We should be in for a Stella evening of Jazz with Aaron and, of course, backing from Les Cirkel, Laurence Evans and Russell Williams. All this in the beautiful surroundings and hospitality of the Highlander pub.

Aaron Liddard is an energetic saxophonist and composer. Aaron released Nylon Man to critical acclaim in 2022. He has performed in the bands of Amy Winehouse, Beverley Knight, Bob Geldof and for Prince’s now-legendary 21 days at the 02 Arena.
