WEDDINGS AT THE TONTINE β€” FOR OVER 130 YEARS! πŸ₯‚

Did you know that the Tontine Hotel has been hosting weddings almost from the very moment it opened its doors at 6 Ardgowan Square?

We recently delved into the old Greenock newspapers and discovered two weddings taking place here in the very first summer of 1892.

❀️ 15th June 1892

Alexander Tough, a ropemaker, married Jeanie Smith, daughter of Thomas Smith of Greenock Galvanizing Works, at the Tontine Hotel.

❀️ 30th June 1892

Just two weeks later, Thomas R. Stove, an engineer, married Agnes More, youngest daughter of the late Andrew More of Greenock β€” again, at the Tontine Hotel.

The building had only recently been transformed from a magnificent Georgian mansion into a hotel, and already couples were choosing it as the setting for one of the biggest days of their lives. πŸ’

By the end of the 1890s, our advertisements were proudly promoting the Tontine's β€œNew Hall for Banquets, Balls, Marriages, &c.”

And more than 130 years later, we're still doing exactly that. ❀️

Different couples.
Different fashions.
Different generations.

But the same building, the same celebrations and, we hope, the same happy memories.

From 1892 to today β€” here's to all the couples who have said β€œI do” at the Tontine.

( If any descendants had photographs of the weddings we would love to see them and any other weddings)

Who has called 𝕋ℍ𝔼 𝕋𝕆ℕ𝕋𝕀ℕ𝔼 home?

Did you know that the Tontine Hotel has been standing in the heart of Greenock for more than 200 years?

Long before it became the hotel we know today, our building began life as a private Georgian mansion.

🏑 Around 1805 – George Robertson

The house was built for George Robertson, a prominent Greenock merchant, magistrate and one of the town's influential figures. The beautiful original mansion forms the heart of the Tontine we still see today.

After Robertson's death in 1828, the house remained in private hands and was subsequently associated with some of Greenock's most prominent residents.

One of those was Adam Fairrie, former Provost of Greenock ( twice) and a successful sugar refiner. Local historical records tell us that the house later passed to Fairrie, 5 of his children born here, who lived here until he moved to Liverpool to look after the family business there until his death in 1879.

🍽️ 1892 – The Buchanan family

In 1892, the mansion's story changed forever when Mrs Buchanan acquired the property and transformed it into a hotel.

The Tontine name had previously belonged to Greenock's original Tontine Hotel in Cathcart Street, but in 1892 the name moved here to Ardgowan Square.

πŸ₯‚ 1907 – John & William Service

In April 1907, the hotel was acquired by John and William Service, well-known Greenock caterers. Contemporary records describe the purchase as ending a 50-year Buchanan connection with the hotel.

βš“ 1971 – The Lithgow family

This is a particularly interesting chapter in our history.

In 1971, the hotel was taken over by the Lithgow family, whose name was synonymous with Greenock's famous shipbuilding industry.

During their ownership, a new bedroom wing was added – the wing which today contains our Standard Rooms.

πŸ‘©β€πŸ’Ό 1986 – Joan Cuthbert

In 1986, Mrs Joan Cuthbert took over the hotel. During her time here, a further two floors were added to the bedroom wing, helping to create the hotel we recognise today.

🏨 2002 – The Nelis family

And then, in 2002, the Tontine entered its current chapter when it was acquired by Mr & Mrs Nelis.

More than 20 years later, we are incredibly proud to still be a family-run hotel, looking after a building that has been part of Greenock's story for over two centuries.

From Georgian mansion… to Victorian hotel… through Greenock's catering and shipbuilding eras… and into the present day.

So many families. So many stories. One Tontine. ❀️

And the best part?

We're still making history here today.
