Sunday 24th May in Godalming!
Davina and the Vagabonds have created a stir on the national music scene with their high-energy live shows, level A musicianship, sharp-dressed professionalism, and Davina’s commanding stage presence. With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits, the band is converting audiences one show at a time, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe.

“Davina Sowers creates her own Americana mishmash — a little Amy Winehouse-worthy neo-soul here, a little Great American Songbook-influenced songcraft there.” Rolling Stone Magazine

Colin Stokes RIP

We are very sad to hear the passing of founder of The Prostate Project Colin Stokes last week, who we have worked with for many years. Colin Stokes established the Prostate Project in 1998 with his consultant urological surgeon, Mr John Davies, after Colin was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the age of 58. With his background working at Unilever and running his own consultancy company, Colin worked tirelessly as a volunteer Chairman for 21 years, overseeing the establishment of the oncology research team at the University of Surrey and building the Stokes Centre for Urology at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. Having retired as Chair in 2020, Colin continued to support the charity through his role as Ambassador, reaching out to the local community through talks, presentations and interviews. Colin was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Surrey and an MBE for services to cancer patients.

Although he hadn’t been well recently, Colin Stokes and his wife were again helping backstage at this year’s ‘Paul Jones & Friends’ gig, providing hospitality to the musicians and celebrity guests. I’m sure Colin would be pleased to know that the total sum raised at this gig for the charity he founded was very nearly £69,500. A further sum of £10,000 was also donated to Cranleigh Arts Centre, of which Paul Jones is a patron.

Colin would also have been very gratified to know that on 4th February (National Cancer Day) the Prostate Project ‘Man Van’ was parked at Guildford Cathedral and tested over 100 men, mostly resulting from the gig. The Man-Van itself had largely been funded by the previous two ‘Paul Jones & Friends’ gigs.

I’m sure that despite this sad news, everyone will be pleased to know that Paul Jones has agreed to continue the gig next year, on Tuesday 5th & Wednesday 6th January 2027.

! Secret gig still sells out after 20 years!

This week saw Paul Jones and Friends play two sell out shows at G-Live Guildford, raising over £80,000 for charity.

The concert saw a host of stars perform, including Van Morisson, Andy Fairweather-Low, Eric Bibb, Colin Blunstone of The Zombies, Dave Kelly of The Blues Band, Lianne Carrol, Chantal McGregor, and 3 times UK Blues Award winner Mississippi Macdonald, and backed by top session players including Paddy Milner (keys, Tom Jones), Scott McKeon (Tom Jones)and Derek Nash (sax, Jools Holland, The Wonder of Stevie). The event was hosted by Manfred Mann and the Blues Band vocalist Paul Jones, who was often enticed into duetting with the artists with his incredible harmonica playing.

The secret gig has been organised by Tony Smith of Eclectic Live Music, and has raised over £400,000 over the years. "This year is the 20th anniversary of the concert initially conceived to save a funding shortfall at Cranleigh Arts Centre. We have gone on to support them and The Prostate Project - a cancer charity based at Royal Surrey County Hospital, after I was diagnosed 15 years ago. The event has helped fund charities projects including building the Stokes Urology centre, a mobile 'Man Van' testing programme, and now a prostate cancer vaccine research programme.

"My thanks to the fantastic artists for donating their time and producing a wonderful show every year, and to our loyal patrons who sell-out this show on the strength of a couple of emails!"

Chairman of The Prostate Project Martin Davies said: "This event is important in both reaching the right audience, and raising much needed funds. I know that many audience members have been prompted to get tested from this event, with dozens being caught early. This year we gave away the new Prostate Cancer PSA self testing kits to those that requested them, and we are very grateful for the positive response, and overflowing buckets at the end of the night!”
