Independent Republic of Jolter - Cider and Perry Bar

Very much a day for popping out to Much Marcle to catch up with James at Gregg's Pit Cider & Perry !
I caught up with him doing his least favourite job (sack washing), but the Sun was out and all was well in this incredible little corner of Herefordshire..

He's currently preparing for the mid-season Perry Pear onslaught, and was so pleased with his early Thorn that he very kindly allowed me to caress the stainless steel tanks in which they have got off to a highly promising start of fermentation..
But not in a rude way...
Phwooaaarrr etc

I was even treated to a sample of something extremely intriguing - for which the time is right at Jolter Central - watch this space!

As well as the bottles of Blakeney Red, Brandy and Winnals Longdon 2025 (6.5%vol) - pictured, we have on the bar:
Aylton Red/Gregg's Pit 2025 (6.5%) and Blakeney Red, Butt and Oldfield (5.5%) - a superb reflection of the Pears of 2025!

We even had time for a cackle and a guffaw or two. Viva Gregg's Pit! 🥂

Happy Birthday Ri!
She may be better known for her intricate patchwork quilting and perusing her collection of Edwardian buttons - but it's a little-known fact that Ri does enjoy the odd glass of Cider.
If you see her this weekend, she particularly likes a Squealy-Blend, but please approach sensitively as she's everso shy and retiring.
In fact, after nearly 10 years coming to Jolter, we can barely get a word out of her.

It's that time of year again...
Get your unidentified Perry Pears over to Hartpury Orchard Centre this Saturday!

Jim Chapman, curator of the National Perry Pear Collection will be at the Orchard Centre this Saturday from 12-5.

His display has won Gold at the Malvern Autumn show for 4 years running and will be on-hand to help identify perry varieties for a small donation.

Due to the weather the fruit will be variable this year, but are hoping for a good display nonetheless!

Come down and hava a wander through the orchards, visit the birdhide and enjoy a pint of local perry. Takeaways and bottles available to buy. Our last Taproom of the year!

ÐO YOU NEED A RAISON?

BOTTLE OF THE WEEK/FESTIVAL OF THE YEAR: Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry Co RAISON D' ÊTRE 2024. 75CL, ABV 7.0%
Broome Farm celebrates their annual festival this weekend, which means that it's also time for the latest Raison D' Être - their flagship Cider..

Equal parts Dabinett and Bisquet, primarily made from fruit from the wonderfully named GAMMEEOOLANDS old orchard; it's fermented 40% in oak, 50% in stainless steel and 10% in plastic - the peaty, smokey aspect in fine balance with those bittersweet tannins that are the hallmark of every great Ross Cider.

The Summer of 2024 is reflected with a lower than usual ABV, so expect a softer and juicier vintage - and it'll be interesting to see how it changes after time in the bottle too...

We're one of over 40 UK venues joining in to celebrate the release of the new RAISON tomorrow, Thursday 3rd September - and you're very welcome to join us for a sample!

Well, Summer 2026 was a blast and thanks are due to all who have helped to keep Jolter going and more or less what it was after our move downstairs last October.
The Pears are falling and the Apples won't be too far behind, so spare a thought for all our Three Counties Cider and Perry producers- we look forward to whatever comes next.

The monsoon hits Mitcheldean's glittering Central Mitcheldean and thoughts turn immediately to comfort...
Step forward Oliver's Cider and Perry Ltd. and their recent release - THE NEXT BIG THING.
It's a keeved medium-sweet Cider, clocking in at 4.8% ABV - Think tarte tatin, creme caramel and rich apple with a dash of bitterness and subtle tannins.
Tom recommends having it with Sticky Toffee Pudding.
