Events and community

We are at the heart of a vibrant community in Glossop. Regular activities at the club include a Folk Club on Tuesdays and an informal music session on Fridays. We are home to a walking group, a reading group, a women's group and a knitting group. The Glossop Folk Train visits us once a month and we host Glossop Record Club for all you Vinyl junkies. We are a community space

and we host a number of groups including the Glossop Guild, Samba Band, a Creative Writing group, Zumba, Peace Group, People's Kitchen and many others. History

The club was founded in 1906 by some of Glossopdale's leading trade unionists, co-operators and suffragettes. They were young and enthusiastic socialists and were extremely active politically in the valley. Throughout our history we have been home to people from all the various traditions on the left and to people with no party political affiliation. Membership

Whilst many of our activities are open to the public, we are a members club. Our normal membership is called a 'social' membership and costs just £5 a year. Once you've been a member for a year you can apply for full membership which entitles you to vote in elections and to stand for committee. Principles

We are proud of our socialist history and expect members to abide by our principles of equality and liberty for all. We do not tolerate sexism, racism or any form of hatred towards minority groups. page rules

SUNDAY 3 MAY FAMILY FRIENDLY FILM: “The Red Turtle” 2pm Free Entry
This deeply moving film was made through international collaboration between the Dutch animator Michael Dudok de Wit, the French screen writer Pascale Ferrau and produiced by the famous Japanese Studio Ghibli in cooperation with various French companies . The film is without dialogue and is designed to cross language, cultural and age barriers. It follows a shipwrecked man stranded on a deserted island who repeatedly tries to escape on a raft, only to be continually thwarted by a mysterious giant red turtle. When he confronts the turtle on land, it transforms into a woman, and the two form a bond, building a life together on the island through the cycles of nature, love, loss, and parenthood. Mark Kermode on The Red Turtle - “a thing of quiet, profound beauty” “utterly bewitching” “It says everything it needs to say without uttering a single word of dialogue.” “deceptively simple but emotionally rich,” The film is considered suitable for audiences of all ages; adults find it deeply moving and children are captivated by the graphics. However, the turtle dies in the film which might disturb younger children - although it then turns into a woman so there is a good ending in this respect.
